Long Term drug use

Hi,
I am a type 1 Diabetic and on insulin - I have never taken Metaformin; but I do extensive research on drugs and Diabetes. I have learn't that Metaformin has a very bad reputation in general. I do know many people who have stopped taking it because of the long term affects on them. Sorry, I don't mean to scare people just making you aware.

I do not take any medication from doctors as the side affects are bad news in general. I have stopped taking everything they prescribed me, apart from the insulin injections as I am a type 1. I have cut down my carbs dramatically; as too many cause chronic inflammation. Instead, I focused on the nutritional aspect in my diet along with vitamins and minerals. The results have been astounding.

As I have done intense research and watched the news constantly about Diabetes, I have realised the National Health has become a business and businesses have to make money. I have also started attending Diabetic Meetings which confirm this in my mind, (but its only my opinion) but I no longer get down about it; as I have realised there are many other options which have remarkable success in life.

Take care and good look

Be very carefully of long term metmorfin I was prescribed for about ten years Result effected my Kidneys. Consultant took me off. These tabs and prescribed alternative. Greatly improved health since. type 2 age 76

I've been on Metformin since 2002 and it doesn't seem to hurt me. 2 X 500mg is enough for me whilst I'm low carbing. It's an effective, safe and cheap medicine!

There is evidence that early prescribing of Metformin leads to later Metformin failure (i.e. when you need to go onto other medications because Metformin alone is not enough).

There is also some evidence that Metformin has heart-protective qualities

Both might be because of the help that Metformin gives Type 2's in controlling their BG levels.

In January, my GP was talking about putting me on Met. but last month, my HbA1c level (38 mmol/mol through diet & exercise alone) led her to change her mind. Apparently, there is a faint possibility of having hypos on Met. if you are controlling BG very well by diet.
