Hello to everyone, it’s been quiet some time since I was last online on the forum site but I know I could get answers to questions from others on here.
Has I’m getting older I’m 76 by the way I’m struggling to keep my Blood Glucose levels within range they used to be for a very long time I’m diet only type2 diabetic have been for 20+ years and my BG range was 5to 7 in a morning, if I did the low carb diet I could get it in the 4 to 5 in a morning but had to stop the low carb diet due to gout in my feet.
Coupled with osteoarthritis in most of my joints the gout was crippling, and I’ve always struggled with my weight consequently Yo Yo dieting since having my children and Ive done most of the diets and weight classes over the years.
In last year or two I find my BG in a morning is now in the 8 to10mmol range my doctor is less than useless not even had a fasting bloods in 3 years upto a few days ago after I phoned about my BG levels that’s when he sent me for a fasting bloods , occasionally podiatry or occasional reviews but I’ve had my back of the eye test done.
Doctor wants to do a telephone consultation but I can’t even get to speak to him until next Monday, I really could do with some answers to this higher BG, someone once mentioned has we get older our insulin levels get less so my age and having diabetes for over 20+ years could be the problem?
Has anyone else heard this has a reason for higher BG readings? I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment, if anyone else has any of these problems can you share how you dealt with this please. Thank you in advance Granny Grump

Hello! I've missed you, it's good to see you here again, but I'm sorry you're having problems.

Yes, it could be that after all this time you do need insulin. One thought I had was...have you had Covid-19? I've had it 3 times now and each time it has taken months for my BG levels to return to what is normal for me.

I think it should be possible to do low carb while avoiding rising your risk of gout episodes. If the current advice is still to avoid red meat and some fish that leaves poultry, cheese, eggs, dairy plus a small amount of nuts and seeds as protein sources?

Hi zand no I’ve not had Covid fingers crossed I don’t get it either, but I was wondering if I needed some medication to help me keep on track better doctors are calling me on Monday to discuss my fasting blood test results so I’m waiting to hear what they have to say.
I do have an idea of what’s causing the rise in BG a year ago I had a condition called Lichens Planus my dentist found it and referred me to hospital, I had a terrible time with it but with researching online and trying different drinks instead of coffee all the time I found decaffinated coffee and tea helped the best.
But has I don’t sleep well I started having a milky Ovaltine drink at bedtime and it does help but it contains a lot of sugar even though I’ve started to have the one made with water I’m sure it’s this drink that’s causing high BG
If anyone has any drinks ideas for bedtime instead of Ovaltine please let me know, preferably not Alcoholic Drinks

Hi TriciaWs
I will give that a try but I do eat all the things on your list the only thing I have which I should avoid from your list is red meat once a week sometimes twice a week. But I will have something different when family are eating meat so thank you for that I’d forgotten about red meat, but what is the fish to avoid we usually have fresh salmon or cod once a week but it’s more expensive than meat now need some alternatives. Thank you Granny _grump

Try home made traditional cocoa. You can use whatever milk (or false milk) you prefer and add sweetners (or not). I like it made with almond milk, tiny sweetner and finished with double cream

Or less calories in chamolie or other herbal tea

MrsA2 thank you for your reply i will definitely give that a try and congratulations on your weight loss over 12 months you have done fantastic.
Would you mind sharing your diet with me if you don’t mind I’ve always struggled with weight loss it would be of great help has I’m on this journey again. K

Just the standard "as low carb as fits with my chosen life style ".
Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, veg, few berries, nuts, olives

No bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, seed oils
No sugar (but some sweeteners every so often)

Helpful supportive hubby and family, who are now mostly low carb too but allow me just a bite or 2 (no more) of things I want to taste

I cook from scratch. I bake a low carb cake, cut it into 16 squares and freeze them, then I have 1 square at a time
I will also have 1 or 2 squares of 85% dark chocolate a night
I drink wine or neat spirits, sometimes with soda, but not more than 2-3 times a week

Early days I counted carbs, snacked on hard boiled eggs or full fat yoghurt.

It gets easier as time goes on. I need to eat less (quantity) and eat less often (timing/fasting) so dinner 6pm each evening then nothing until hungry next day, often the next evening.
If I'm hungry, I eat - usually something with fat, a chunk of cheese or a coffee with cream for example. If I'm not hungry, I don't eat!!! Sounds simple but it meant undoing years of habits and conditioning .
I eat to my meter, and love the support from this forum and how much low carb info and recipes there is out there now.
I am partially sighted and don't want to lose any more sight. This has to be me for life, not just a diet that finishes or I can give up

Hope this helps
