Looking for advice on RH

Hi there,

Brand new user here I found this website when looking for info and hoping someone can help me!

I am a 37 year old female, 5ft9, 60kgs so normal weight range. I bought myself a blood sugar monitor (one where you prick your finger) as I thought I may have been suffering with low blood sugar at times.

I’ve been monitoring my blood sugar at random times over the last couple of weeks and have noticed the following:

19th nov - level was 3.4 at 6:30pm I was feeling a bit weak
24th nov - 1.3 at midday a couple of hours after I had a big slice of cake. This seems really low to me so not sure if the reading was correct. I was feeling shaky and weak and had a really bad headache. Had some lunch and it went up to 7.5

At various other times it has been between 4.4 and 7.8

I have taken it at 5am the last 3 mornings upon waking after at least 8 hours fasting and it has been 5.8, 6.4 and 5.9

I’m confused really about what the readings mean and what might be going on. Does it seem like I may have reactive hypoglycaemia which could potentially cause my weak spells?

are the morning readings too high? A lot of websites state these are prediabetic levels but I am a healthy weight and eat a relatively healthy balanced diet although I do love sugar and have chocolate or sweets nearly every day. Especially at the moment!

should I try and speak to my Gp or try and reduce my sugar intake? Any tips on when best to monitor my levels so I can get a good idea of what’s going on?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thank you :)

My advice, eat that piece of cake again & take a reading every 30 mins for 3 hours.
A normal RH response would spike high, perhaps 10+ then crash into the low 3s @ 2 hour mark.
I'd question that 1.3 reading without symptoms.
The fasting readings are a bit high but you might read up on dawn phenomenon.

Hi @Jo25869 and welcome to our forum.

Many non diabetic people have sugar crashes. Many people have hypoglycaemic episodes that they never know about, many live healthy with levels in the threes without any difficulties.
Then there are those who have hypoglycaemia or diabetes because of many, many reasons.
The problem with these readings are that they are just a snapshot of your blood levels at that time. Knowing how to use your glucometer to get an understanding of how and why you are getting the sugar crashes and if it is serious enough to be detrimental to your health.
So, first step, is to talk to your GP about your concerns and your doctor should then have a full blood panel test, which includes a Hba1c test. This is a test that will give a representation of your last few months. If you are also testing and show your doctor the results, he will advise the next steps to be taken.
Testing should be done, a fasting test should be done after about half an hour after getting up before breakfast. The next tests should be done pre meal and two hours after first bite. And if the result is within 2mmols of the pre meal test, that is good. If it's above 2mmols, then something in that meal is causing a spike too high for your metabolism.
Any more I can't tell you until you have talked to your GP.

I would go to the Reactive Hypoglycaemia sub forum and read up on how hypoglycaemic episodes can be controlled by a balanced healthy diet. And bear in mind, what you consider healthy foods, could be like me and making you ill.

Have you had any other illnesses a cold or flu, that could also effect you having sugar crashes.

My best wishes.
Keep asking, keep safe.
