Hi. The hospital have been monitoring my sons BMs for the last month. They are a bit concerned that his fasting BMs seem to be consistently over 5.5 and on Tuesday reached 9.7, and his 2hr post meal BMs are always over 9.5, apart from after his breakfast when his levels are within normal range. MODY has been mentioned but we have yet to receive any diagnosis. Just wondering if anyone else has any idea what might be causing his highs or if anyone has been in a similar situation?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I cannot answer your query but will bump your post up for a reply.

I'll bump this puppy up too....

I don't have any kids or a desire to either... But try to make this worth while..?

What are they at the hospital or you yourself feeding the babe...? Is your child getting the natural milk or formula stuff...?
Food for thought. I often wonder about the "follow on milk" & that kind of thing...?

I'm by no means an expert.. But, think of that powdered stuff in coffee machines & the way normal milk can a hypo (low blood sugar) cure/correction...?!! ( my train of thought.)

Sorry to be direct with this sensitive question... (My wife is sat next to me & points out the error of my ways with this approach which I respect.)

Please kick me in the **** if I'm wrong about the "baby milk formula" stuff...?

I sincerely hope this points in the right direction..?

Thanks for the bump :) He's on unsweetened Soya milk as he has a dairy allergy. I keep a food diary anyway as he has been under the dietician since he was 3 months old, so I now he has a healthy diet (I make pretty much everything from scratch because of his dairy and wheat allergies).

Hey, I can appreciate your query & your all doing the best for the little un..
I'm an out the box thinking kind of guy..

Incidentally, my mum was a staunch vegan at one point & I always used soya milk really mean in my coffee on visits as a precaution with regard to the carbs.... I really don't know that much about the stuff..! Lol

Hopefully some of the "food techs" will see this when this reply pushes your post to "top of the pops"...

Though a confirmed diagnosis regarding diabetes either way should help on that score...?

All can be done till then in knock this up the pecking order till a perent with a D child the same age can make a sane comment..?!

....As an afterthought. You could ask the type 2 diabetics the effects of soya milk on blood sugars..?

Just another thought.

just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear your little boy is having problems. I am a type one diabetic myself but have a daughter and son both under 3 years old and i can imagine how stressed you must be feeling about it but i can't offer any advice as neither of my children have diabetes x

Hello, please accept my deepest hopes for you and your babe, in the forth coming path of getting the right balance for the little precious one. What are thehospital specialists telling you? have they been helpful in getting the balance right for him? I pray it will not be try this try that, because it would be totally unfair to both of you. I will keep my eyes open for any items on the net, and pass them on to you, and what is the pedatrician doing to help you, anf the specialist diabetic doctors, all should be there for you both. please keep telling us, ttfn

Thank you for your reply. The hospital are not being very helpful at all. He doesn't fit into the Type 1 or 2 categories so they have just left me checking his BM levels with no real answer. My wee boy has had a few issues since he has born and I have had to fight to get a diagnosis and not be dismissed each time (a bit annoying considering I actually work in the Children's ward!). Kind of being made to feel like an over anxious first time mother. His fasting and 2 hour post meal BMs are not normal (his fasting BM this morning was 9.4, clearly not normal) and they are in no rush to review him. Grrrr! Hopefully someone on here will help shed some light on the whole thing :)

Hi

With a fasting bm of 9+ have the hospital actually given him any insulin to bring his levels down?

Can you give an idea to us on his bm's during a day and with the eating times included?

Is your child normal weight? Weight loss can be sign of type 1. Have they actually done a GAD test to find out if he is a type 1?

It must be a struggle for you, very hard for parents without a diagnosis, and hospital staff should appreciate that..

Loving life

He's only had a fasting BM of 9+ twice. It's normally 6-7ish, so high for a non diabetic but not high enough for insulin. He has his breakfast at half 7, lunch at 12.30 and dinner at 5.30. 2 hours post meal can range from 9-15.1, which I know is high post meal.

He has always been a slim child and used to be on high calorie additives to maintain his weight. He stopped these just before his 1st birthday and has been maintaining his weight since. Not having some sort of diagnosis is very very frustrating!! They have confirmed he is not type 1.

I think soya milk has more carbs but no lactose so more effect on BG. wont matter though if he is lactose intolerant.

He eats a normal, varied diet. Fruit, veg, meat, wheat and dairy free snacks like oatcakes. He does get the odd biscuit but not very often. The dietician is in control of his diet due to him being really slim despite eating like a horse.

Sounds quite carb heavy, but I know nothing about T1. Carbs are carbs though.
