I do not have diabetes
Hi to all!Im new to this site and allthough Ive not been diagnosed with diabetes,I am somewhat concerned about it.Ive been meaning to get checked out at the local GP but to be honest, the state of my local practice and past experience there leaves me in the mind of only going there in a "desperate"or "urgent" moment.
I've recently discovered(but has been getting worse for a while now) that I'm getting uncontrolled bouts of extreme tiredness, more extreme after I've just eaten. But in a complete contrast to that I have bouts of energy that are scarily high with the feeling I could sprint a marathon not just run it,on top of this I'm getting bleary vision and have recently had to hold onto things to steady myself due to dizziness and the fear of falling over.my thirst never seems to be quenched and I drink humongous amounts of water, which inevitably results in the need of the toilet very often. Both my parents have/had diabetes, but which type I don't know and probably won't find out as my mother passed away several years ago and my father I have no contact with and don't know his whereabouts to be frank.I think the question Im asking is does anybody out there think that this warrants a check up for diabetes, and as I don't want to sound or look like a hypochondriac, and don't really want to go to a GP who's attitude seems to be "are you dying?"or "is it hanging off?"I would rather get a bit of info and advice from actual sufferers of diabetes before braving the battlefield of my GP without any "ammunition "so to say!i would be very very grateful if anyone could advise/help on this matter!
Many thanks and kind regards !
Peter.

Welcome, Pete. Get yourself checked out. Just for your own piece of mind!

You do have some symptoms, but it could also be the warm weather!

Only tests can confirm that you have some condition.

Read through the site and see what others have done.

Get an appointment mate, probably be the best thing that you have done for a while.

Thanks for the rapid reply !!
I did think about the weather being a factor ,but I also looked back to when I started to notice these things and that was very early on in the year, and its gradually got worse over that time.
Is there anywhere else that I could hi to get this checked or does it have to be the GP?as I did remember seeing advertisements for some kind of diabetes test at pharmacists?

I agree - go to your doctor. I was exactly the same as you, I hated going to my GP for the same reasons. I have found that I get on with him a lot better now I have been diagnosed diabetic and he can see that I am trying to help myself. Some of the tests you need can be quite expensive, so use your GP for the tests and then come back to us for help and advice if necessary when you have the results. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

If and a big if, you are diagnosed, you will get free prescriptions and tests, so, yes! Go the docs, get it over with, come back and tell us how you got on! It's better and less stressful to know than to worry yourself silly!

Yes you could go to the pharmacist for a test but it will only be an indication.
They will just refer you to your GP if you are anything over 7 mmol/L.
It would be better to see your GP but the pharmacist is better than nothing.
As copied above Lloyds do the tests but many independant ones do as well.

I forgot to say...when you get your results from your GP ask him for a print out of them, then if there's anything you don't understand someone here can help you...probably not me though because I don't understand them all myself.

But you are beginning to! And you are taking the advice on board!

Hi Peter

Please go to your gp. He is not the boss of you. If diagnosed, you will rarely see him as you will be referred on to specialist health care workers. Be sure to let us know how you get on. All the best.

Big massive thanks to all of you for your quick and very helpful advice.I think the only thing to do is take all your advice and get checked there.I will get into it straight away, thanks again .

Just to add - when I had symptoms went to the local Lloyds Pharmacy for a walk in finger prick test.
This showed significantly high BG so I then went to the GP for more detailed testing.

In my opinion this is where using your local Pharmacy is a very good thing.
You can get an initial test without taking up time at the surgery - which I understand is why there is a push to use Pharmacies for initial low level medical advice.

GPs for long term health care, of course.

Cheers
