Has this system been used yet. Is. Is it worth having. I am on g7 and pod dash now

My son is current on Dexcom 6 and Omnipod Eros. He will be skipping Dash and moving to Omnipod 5 late August so will be able to comment but not for a few months yet. Will be interested in hearing from anyone else who has recently moved/moving to that combo.

Also been advised by diabetic nurse that only NovoRapid has been approved for closed loop. Moved from Humalog to Fisasp beginning of the year after being on Humalog for about eight years so looks like he will have to change again. Not sure if this is standard NHS policy or just our local commissioning group policy?

I’ll be really interested to hear how your son gets on. I have an appointment to discuss pumps in November and have been seriously considering the Omnipod 5 as I am not keen on tubing - too much to get entangled! I do have concerns about scarring since you have to replace Omnipod every 3 days. Has that been an issue? I’ve been using Fiasp for several years now and really like it. Don’t know why only Novorapid has been approved but it’s possible that it acts more slowly and is therefore more suitable.

In my experience - yes - definitely!!- Was on the dash and g7 but opted to go with the G6 as it is the only CGM currently compatible with the OP5. Been on the 5 for 12 days now and so far fantastic!!!!. Had 11 consecutively fantastic nights sleep - kept me perfectly at or just below my target of 6.1 mmol every night - straight from the off - I mean lines so straight I thought I had flatlined whilst sleeping!!. The system keeps adapting to my insulin needs and I need to make more adjustments to my carb ratios (its surprising how off I have found them to be now I have a a basal profile adapted to my needs) - I expected there would be a few rocky weeks but so far not as bad as I imagined this system is fantastic!! - if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask :)

Despite Fiasp not being tested and approved by Insulet my son's consultant gave us approval to continue using Fiasp prior to starting on the Omnipod 5. It's been about 4 weeks now. We were told it can take a couple of weeks before it starts to really perform. We had to set it up with our current basal and it can only give up to 4 times that dose by the hour.

I was under the impression that it was supposed to work out a pattern and start applying that basal and I did think, good luck with that:). Having monitored it for a few weeks I have come to the conclusion that it has not established a pattern and is actual reactional. At the start of the process you have to set a target basal and a basal to correct over. To my surprise the lowest setting for both of those was 6.1 so I set that for the full daily 24hr period. I am used to setting the target in the fives although the correction factor used to be 7.1 or above. Currently if the BG goes above 6.1, it will start provide basal insulin and will stop when it calculates you have enough and it starts dropping. Below 6.1 and it doesn't issue any basal unless your on the rise and it anticipates that your going to breach your target. You can therefore receive 0.5 - 2.0 units in the space of an hour for example and then not receive anything for a couple of hours afterwards. It doesn't give it all at once rather ever five minutes in smaller increments.

First couple of weeks the average BG was 6.9, the last couple of weeks the BG has been 6.3. Omnipod 5 week 3 and 4.JPG
One of the issues I have noticed in the last couple of weeks is that as my son rises above 6.1 having eaten breakfast or lunch and you get a tempoary spike in bloods the system has kicked in boosted the basal insulin resulting in a hypo an hour or two later. I am going to try and combat that by changing the bg to correct over to 8.3 for an hour or so shortly after eating so it doesn't start pumping insulin due to a small rise in BG shortly after eating. It would be nice to be able to configure by the day. I would for example set Saturday and Sunday slightly different to Monday - Friday.

If you are used to doing extensions we were surprised to be told there was no extension. Your expected to give insulin up front and then let the basal manage the rest. We have started given a percentage up front and depending on if its it is being managed by the basal we give the remaining carbs over time if required.

With regard to scarring with pod changes every three days I don't think it's an issue if you are rotating to different parts of your body each time allowing the body repair itself. I do wish they would enable it to go to 4 days as it feels like we are forever changing pods. 2/3 times a week whereas 4 days would be 1/2 times a week. That along with the Dexcom which is every 10 days.

Your experience sounds fabulous and I want to understand how you manage to achieve this so well so please kindly update me.

I’m using Omnipod 5 and Dexcom G6.
Changed my G6 this morning and there’s a big difference between the G6 and finger prick. What should I do?
