Looking for fellow clean unprocessed healthy eaters :)

Hiya, I'm 35 T1 and 2 years ago due to IBS issues I had to strip back my diet to clean unprocessed food. Its taken a year and a half to get completely into this and get a regime going and I've settled into it after 6 months and now my sugars are amazing, cholesterol is 2.4, bp good etc. Plus so much energy and I also go hiking/rambling in the countryside. I said goodbye to dieting 2 years ago. No counting of carbs, fat, calories etc just eating natural unprocessed food which fills me up quicker and keeps my sugars stable. A side effect was losing 16lbs and my abs are starting to show through without gym etc. Just wondering if anyone else has had success too? I'm veggie :)
 
How would you define a ''clean unprocessed healthy eater'' pennyjwills, to be honest I don't think any of us could say we don't eat processed food as simple things like cheese, butter and milk are processed.

All sounds very good Penny and pleased you've found a way in dealing with your IBS, but how do you work out your insulin doses if you don't count carbs?
 
Obviously there is now way to go entirely unprocessed nowadays.

I eat as unprocessed as possible. I know there are fellow healthy clean eaters as me who have found the benefits of ditching diets. I don't crave cake or pizza etc. I crave fresh natural fruit and I make my own fruit and nuts bars using raw cocoa.

Since I've been injecting nearly 20 years I have autopilot for knowing my insulin units to foods ratio.

By saying that I dont count carbs or fat or calories etc it means I am not dieting. Ie no restrictions just eating clean and healthy. Eating loads of fresh fruit and vegetables is not a diet.

I had hoped for a more positive response to this post. Unfortunately I am unable to delete it now.

I'm type 2 and a vegetarian. I would love to hear about some of your meals and recipes.

I've always eaten well but then comfort ate junk food on top of the lovely family meals I ate.

I had a bit of a wake up call and am trying to revert back to my old healthy habits.

Have you go any menus you'd like to share?

It does look like you've found the perfect way of eating and controlling your IBS Penny. I wasn't being negative in any way as I was just curious as to what you meant by the title of the thread as it wasn't clear, the insulin question was so one I asked for the simple fact I'm a type 1 diabetic myself, we can learn so much from fellow diabetics just by reading other's experiences.
 
Hi Penny !

Type 1 myself and also try and eat as clean a diet as possible based around vegetables,berries,nuts,dairy and meats.Although I do like a bit of organic peanut butter every now and then.

Our methods differ as I'm not veggie and I low carb but I think we're singing from the same hymn sheet regarding eating 'clean' food. :thumbup:

I don't think the response has been negative at all and thank you for posting!

Really interested in "clean" food. My brother does Primal, but he's a fitness NUT. I'm really interested to know what - exactly - you eat? Any chance you could post some sort of list? Or some guidelines maybe??

As a T2 with bizarre BG readings, my diet is extremely restricted, out of necessity. Fruit of any kind is off the menu, as are all grains and pulses, starchy veg etc.

Any and all insight into any ideology at all is greatly appreciated, by everyone here, I think. :)

I've got some lovely local venison in my freezer waiting to be casseroled.

I had some collared doves nesting in my garden this year, but my 9-year old vegetarian daughter was adamant that they were to be left alone.
 
Hiya, I have salads and smoothies and lean veggie protein (I make my own Aduki and bulghar burgers/koftas). I eat loads of fruit and vegetables.

As an example this morning I made pearl barley risotto with broccoli, green beans, peppers, carrots, red onions and topped with crumbled goats cheese and fresh basil for my lunchbox and I have a smaller tub filled with fresh figs, peaches, blackberries and natural yoghurt. I have oat crackers for this afternoons snack and clean miso paste (only 3 natural ingredients: soyabeans, brown rice, seasalt) for afternoon hot drink.

For breakfast I had a spinach and soft cheese omelette with a load of baby plum tomatoes abd mushrooms.

Dinner I made a big batch of mixed bean chilli last night so will be having leftovers tonight.

I basically try and pack as much colourful fruit and veg into every meal.

I make "icecream" by freezing bananas and blitzing with cocoa and agave and vanilla seeds. :)

I use natural pea protein too in order to keep my sugars stable. I put it in a shaker with vanilla and cocoa and almond milk.

I try and make sure my body has all the nutrients it needs.

I buy popcorn kernels and I have an airpopper and use fresh rosemary, chilli etc etc to flavour it if I want munchy snacks.

I make my own houmous and pesto etc :)

I find that eating as natural as possible makes you feel fuller and you eat less.

I do buy Doves Farm brown rice pasta but I also have a pastamaker if I'm feeling experimental. I also have chickpea flour so make chickpea tortillas :)
 
You should see my kitchen cupboards... I went to poundland a month ago and bought a load of food storage tubs... I have tubs of different grains, lentils, beans and flours.
Red Lentils
Green Lentils
Quinoa - I use to add crunch to my raw bars, thicken up casseroles or just cooked for salads.
Pearl Barley - awesome to use for risottos instead of white sugarific rice
Wild Rice
Mixed Nuts
Unsweetened Dried Fruit - dates, apricots, goji berries, sultanas etc - all good for making fruit and nut bars
Chickpea (gram) flour
Brownrice Flour
Brown Rice Pasta/Spaghetti

I tend to eat a whole array of vegetables in as many colours as possible as more colour = more nutrients.

As for exercise I only go hiking and walking at weekends although currently at work we have a global fitness challenge and I got challenged to do 50 situps and 50 starjumps last night!!


ps. Thank you for the positive responses. I've got friends who constantly are on diets and quick fix regimes instead of prolonged healthy eating/living and they are so sceptical about breaking their boundaries. I've had a lot of success with my Instagram blog too and got a lot of followers of my daily lunchboxes :)

That sounds fantastic Penny. I'm jealous! :) - only had time for a quick read as I have to back out now but I'll take a better look later this evening.

At first glance though, there seem to be a lot of things on there which I have problems with. :/ - How long, roughly, did it take you to establish this way of eating and did your BG stabilise quickly or was it a slower process, do you remember??

Hiya, it definitely wasn't a quick process and I had to start getting up earlier by 30 mins every morning in order to prep

Multi-tasking and timing for me is a must. I start running a bath and then get a non-stick pan with lid on the heat with spinach to wilt it and mushrooms and tomatoes. I then whisk an egg and throw in the wilted spinach and cook the omlette in same pan as tomatoes and mushrooms. While all thats cooking I start chopping all my fruit and veg/salad depending on what i'm having. In 30 mins I've cooked brekkie and prepped breakfast, lunch and snacks. I'm regimented in this every weekday morning.

If you read my old posts in other forums you'll see I struggled at first but the last 6 months my fasting sugars have been bang on and dropped my hba1c by 15% on last time. I think it takes 3 months to get a routine and 3 months for body to adjust.

I've been eating clean for 2 years and first year and a half was trial and error and lots of testing. It takes a month of eatingclean for body to stop craving processed stuff and also to clear dieting mindset. X
 
Hi pennyjwills, I agree with carraway and hornplayer and thank you for posting. Would you please share with us some of your menus, I'm sure that it would be beneficial to many people
