Have a look for a running club in your area. Get some good advice there from experienced runners, with atraining plan, to build up gradually. Most important expense is decent shoes. A battered old pair of trainers not good. Get a decent pair from specialist shop. Then enjoy.
Most important thing is a heart rate monitor, make sure you don't overdo it to start with so that you can't exercise regularly. Better a bit every day rather than sporadic.
For a starting heart rate use 180 minus your age (so if you are 40, that gives 140). Don't go over that even if it means walking.
