So I was diagnosed with typed 2 in May. I was an 7.1mmol/L. And I refused medication and researched until I got it down to about 5.7mmol/L in July and haven't been retested but will at the end of the month. I got off my blood pressure medication because everything was great until Sunday morning. My blood sugar and blood pressures were all great. I got really sick in the night for no reason on Sunday morning. It took me 4 days to get my blood sugar back down and my blood pressure is still high and pulse is too but it's going down. I was doing so well that I almost thought it was a mistake and I wasn't diabetic until this week. But I saw the blood sugar spike for no reason and then I began to get a tummy ache, then throwing up, then I passed out and dreamed I went for help but didn't really, and when I woke up my throat and abdomen felt like I was beaten. I still haven't gotten my voice back and I am just now getting my appetite back. I still am having trouble with my thoughts and focus. I was so stinky and weak and thirsty and my legs were so cold but my neck was sweaty and cheek were red. I assume I had a fever. I couldn't even find the energy to get off the bathroom floor. And when I got the energy to drink I began to throw up again. And by some amazing grace of God, I found the strength to drink water after my bath and for the rest of the day it was sleeping and drinking water before I could function. Most of Sunday is a blurr to me... So I have a few questions. 1) what can cause this? It was worse than when I had gastritis, dehydration, and food poisoning. I never made it to a hospital cus I felt fine but tired by the time I really knew what happen and put things all together. I still don't know where the potatoes came from cus I didn't make them or buy them. 2) Do I need to tell my diabetic educator because she think my numbers are normal and I am doing great. 3) Do I need to tell my doctor? 4) Any idea what happen to me? 5) Any idea how to avoid it? I know I was having trouble eating on Saturday and I manage to eat a sandwich at noon, a small slice of pizza and half a bread stick at 4, and a few chicken wings at 8 then I fell asleep around 9. I should have been hungry cus I went on a three mile bike ride and I felt fine all week. I felt fine on Saturday, but had trouble feeling full after a couple bites. My blood sugars were optimal all week and even on Saturday. They were fine until I woke up with energy at 1am on Sunday. But it wasn't real energy cus I was sick from about 2am until 8am passed out or throwing up in the bathroom and off on sleeping from 8am until 8pm with crazy dreams thinking I got help and trying to think what messed me up and dreaming the doctor told me go home and eat mash potatoes tonight and they have all the vitamins a sick person needs and drink that Healthy water to nutualize the acidic wing sauce and stomach acid. I have a vivid imagination and the power of suggestion.. I ate mash potatoes I had for some reason and health water (electroids and higher ph level than normal water. It's expensive water that someone gave me to try and I never did. But Wednesday when I saw my diabetic educator nurse, she said I was doing amazing and explained I was still diabetic even though I had everything in normal ranges. It was really scary Sunday cus I have never been so sick or weak in my life. It was like gastritis, food poisoning, and dehydration all at once but with extreme weakness and like a day dream world. I seriously thought I went outside to get a neighbor for help and fell in the grass so I decided to call for help and i would be ok cus help was coming. That was my last thought before I woke up at about 8am in a Luke warm bath tube and freezing. But in reality I must have turned on the bath to clean up then fell asleep and it's the same thing I did for gastritis. And when that happen I told people the heat helps my pain in my tummy so I assume the same logic was in my head. I dunno. Anyway, if you can advise me more than the obvious that it's really dumb and scary please help.

I've heard that there's a really nasty strain of norovirus going around - but really only a doctor can tell you what was wrong. It sounds ghastly :(

Never heard of norovirus, but I feel 85% better. I think my throat only hurts from throwing up. My blood sugars are back to a safe zone but not as good as they were. And bp is going back down it was 130/90 today. It's normally around 118/78. And my tummy isn't as upset or making noises today and I ate without feeling full after a few bites. And I only have a temp of 99.2 today. So whatever I had hits hard but gets better quickly for me. It's just the sore throat bugging me and bp. But on a diabetes stand point.. Not over all health do I need to tell them I got sick and all my numbers messed up? If they go back up than what do I do. I'm getting better now but in the future if it happens than what do I do.

it could be a virus ... i once was hospitalized for 2 month while most others only was a little sick for 4 days from that virus... a lot of old people were at the hospital too and one other young girl like me then...
when it started for me during 15 minutes I was so ill that I couldn´t walk and had to lay out of my door to wait for anybody coming I could ask for help....
don´t think it is lack of vitamins when you are feeling fine so soon again... but of cause your electrolytes can get out of wack from vomiting a lot... scare that you got so weak...

but of cause you must mention it for your GP he/she is the one you must relay on when getting ill og getting any complications... so please don´t hide any illness for GP...

@Looking4someone2help, that sounds very like what made me take to my bed last Christmas Eve (I hardly remember Christmas Day at all!). It was truly vile and I didn't eat anything for four days and subsisted on water, weak tea and occasional sips of lemonade (this was before I was diagnosed with T2D).

Funnily enough, I'm reading Dr Richard Bernstein's book at the moment and this morning got to the chapter on coping with illness. The dangers of dehydration are much greater because your body starts to take fluids from your blood so glucose rises.

He recommends drinking water with a tiny bit of salt and potassium in it to replace lost minerals and, most important of all, see your doctor. Get an emergency appointment if necessary.

They did blood work so my vitamins show I am really low on vitamin D, slightly low on calcium, slightly low red blood cells and that may be iron or folic acid. She didn't seem worried just said its a bit lower but not low enough to worry. She said everything else looked great. She was happy with my other numbers and she has me on 50,000 mg of vitamin d one per week and a multivitamin. The vitamin D has been sense March and multivitamin sense July. I went for vitamin test yesterday. But I eat mostly fruits and veggies, so I doubt it's vitamins. I eat rice or cereal to keep my numbers steady through the day. I probably don't eat enough meat and diary, but I added beans to my diet a few months ago. I never ate beans but their better than meat actually. I feel mostly fine. I guess I'll call the doctor if I'm not normal by Monday. Normal as in 100% no tummy ache, no throat hurting, bp around 120/80, pulse under around 85, and blood sugars go up, and my brain doesn't think normal. My friend says it was probably food poisoning and dehydration. She says it's worse if your diabetic cus your blood sugars go up when your sick. I wouldn't hide it, but I don't want to bother him for something over and done.

@Tabbyjoolz I remember everything except from the point I got in the tub until a few hours after I got out and back in bed. Maybe 4am-10am, some or all is foggy. I remember my 7lb cat stepping on my belly lightly with one paw and it was like he hit me hard in the belly. And once I got water and stopped throwing up than I got better. But it was horrible.

I had to keep my cats off my stomach too! It sounds like you're over the worst, even if your blood sugars are still awry. Take it easy for now, eat sensibly and they should level. It took me nearly a fortnight to recover fully from that bout of Norovirus. Pleased you got checked out too.

folic acid has its name from foile which means leaf in french... and because the most easy way to get enough is from green leaves like spinach and wine-leaves and alike....

Iron is most easily uptaken from red meat with a glass of orange-juice at the same meal... but the orange can be changed by a vitamine-C pill, as vitamine-C is neccesary for iron uptake... one can get iron from vegetables but it is harder to uptake for humans and then the person need very much red and green vegetabes to get enough like parsley, green cale red pepper...

I thought it was food poison when i was ill but it was a virus...the half village got ill

rice an cereals ... is that good for diabetes at all ?

Ha ha, that's what my doctor told me. Eat leafy greens and it's OK to eat red meat your total cholesterol is perfect and if it goes up than you still might be perfect. I just hate red meat, but I do crave a burger or these steaks put as near me a few times per year. For me, I have to eat cereal or else I get blood sugars at the edge of too low. I eat regular old fashion Cheerios. They told me to eat carbs at ever meal. My blood sugars can drop too low without carbs in my meals. But I seem to have the food under control and not my stress. I get stressed out and I don't know how to control it. I try running, kick boxing, yoga, and sleeping. Apparently my family thinks it's fun to make me cry and tell me things I can't control when I tell them not to. I just need to change my name and run away from my crazy family sense they don't care. I told them and they gave me a few hours to relax and then started up yelling at me and trying to say things about me that aren't true and tell me things to upset me that I can't control. So I need to learn stress management.

Oh yeah brown rice and oatmeal is good for me when my numbers are high right now. White rice and cereal is good for me when blood sugars are low. @Freema but I eat 50- 75% veggies and fruit at every meal to control my numbers and the other 50-25% is nuts, beans, meats, or stratch. For me, when I'm not stressed this controls my diabetes but occasionally I go a little too low. I rarely go too high.

I feel 90% better and my brain is starting to get out of the clouds. It was horrible but he's a sweetie and cute. I have a Siamese cat and Siamese mix.

Where did you get the idea that all these carbohydrates are good for you? They're probably the thing that is sending your blood glucose all over the place - I'd have reactive hypoglycemia all the time if I ate those kinds of foods. The carbs are what cause the wild BG swings. You might want to read up on the condition or check out the sub-forum for Reactive Hypoglycemia. You're going to feel like garbage until you get off the blood glucose rollercoaster :(

Diabetic educator said I am not eating enough carbs and that's why my numbers were dropping. She said to eat cereal in the morning when I told her I usually eat fruit or smoothy. The fruit and veggies seem to keep my feeling the best and they don't affect my numbers like protein and starch or diary. She said that's not true. I said I'm usually always 85-95 when I check and after eating about 115. She said after eating I should be 140 and I said then I get sleepy and a tummy ache. She said that's cus your not eating enough carbs throu the day. She asked what I ate for lunch the day before and I said a salad with a few slices of chicken. She said add rice. She said what was for dinner and I said last night was potatoes, green beans, and a few bites of pork. She said you need a little carbs through out the day. My a1c came back from Wednesday 5.3. She said I have been too strict on controlling my carbs and I said I thought I was doing well. That was the talk about 10 days ago. Maybe that's why I got so sick over the weekend? I was listening to her. And then she ordered an a1c, but this lady didn't look the healthiest. But just cus you know how to be healthy doesn't mean you are. I worked in a hospital and the fattest people I ever saw were nurses and I don't get it. I saw my dad die and mom early and it makes me want to protect my skin from cancer and protect my heart from a heart attack. It makes me want to learn to be healthy. I just need good facts to get healthy. She looked about 100lb over what I would think is a healthy weight, but I think I look about 50lb over. She talked about how she use to run and stuff, so I dunno. I don't want to judge. I just want to be healthy!

people doing night-work do get more easily fat... and nurses do that and mostly cant thoose not to.. and they are stressed as well as there are too much work for them when in job, which is another factor that makes people get overweight... but my impressions is not that nurses are anymore fat than other people... but most diabetics 2 are for a fact... and I think you should stop being so oversimplifying and judgementall only from the looks of people... after all most of the people in here are still obese or have been... not all but most..

I didn't mean it that way. I am sorry and hope I didn't offend anyone. I am overweight for about 3 years. I gained a lot of weight very quickly. I am now about 90kg and most my life about 60kg. So I am not judging weight. I don't even see myself as fat until something doesn't fit. Please forgive me anyone I offended cus I wasn't judging the weight on your body. but the carbs the lady was telling me to eat and another member questioning where I got the advice to eat more carbs. It was my diabetic educator... And she was an over weight nurse. Nurses at the hospital near me eat a lot of unhealthy food too. The hospital I worked at the doctors bought us lunch at least once per week.... Pizza, Chinese food, and fast food. They brought donuts and bagels every Friday. And cake once per month for the birthdays. That not counting all the chocolate or cookies or brownies or popcorn or soda. Or if there was a holiday than we got food from other dept or office or each other or patient and their families. I will say hospital run gyms are cheaper.... Especially for employees. I wasn't over weight then but I was more active and younger. That's what I saw when I worked at the hospital near me... Not that it wasn't fun. Not judging them... Not my place! I ate the food with them. I ate bad foods until 6 months ago and someday I will again.

I'm definitely not the only person on this site that advises reducing carbs :)

I'll tag @daisy1 to give you the information for newcomers.

Also, there are a couple of links in my signature that you might find helpful:
