Hi
I am type 2 and been diagnosed for nearly 1 year now. I managed to keep bloods under control until a few months ago. I put on a few pounds and now it's jumping around between 8 and 16. Another factor is medication. The doctors put me on metformin in 2 weeks ago and it's been high ever since I just don't understand.
I hate this , I hate eating and I feel angrier now then when I was diagnosed .
Is this normal ? Does metformin have a bad effect for some.
I have got into a bit of a state about it all really, I know I should loose a few pounds, I should go back to the gym but I feel completely rubbish about it all it like being controlled by it.
Feeling very sorry for my self I know !

I have kept carbs low, it's been difficult since it's got colder but I still try and keep them low. I know I have been off track with foods . I am just sick of it , I think I fell into a trap that if I'm taking tablets I could eat more

I eat salads, fish meat eggs and cheese.
I don't eat potatoes, fruit, some veg like parsnips or carrots or peas. I don't eat pastry , bread rice or pasta. If i do I spike. I don't eat cereal sweets or puddings . Sugar free jelly and sometimes a profitta roll ha ha if I'm living on the edge
I know some people who are type 2 that eats like normal people on mess the same as me and unlike me obese and they seem to be fine ? Their bs is much lower than mine. I seem to have got worse since going on metformin

Hi Tina, I think I have read your post correctly, on what you eat & don't eat, but not quite sure, could you just say what you eat.
I tried to answer here.......
Its good you don't eat potatoes, but the Fruit, Parsnips, Carrots & Peas are not the best. It's usually suggested that it's the veg's from above the ground are OK rather than those that grow below, although swede is not too bad. Parsnips are supposed to be very bad, but need testing for you, and fruit seems to affect a lot of us diabetics, usually only berries, or very small amounts. Again you need to test.

You need to be testing you blood taking a reading when you start a meal then 2hrs after that time. It's best if the reading is within 2mmol/L from the first to the second.

I can not answer for the Metformin clearly it should help to reduce your levels, but I notice you suggested you thought you would be able to eat more as you now have the medication. The Metformin will only help slightly, so if you are eating larger portions the Metformin probably wont help. I would suggest you go back to your doctor and tell him what you are eating and whether anything has changed since going on the medication.

I think you know already that Metformin won't keep your BS down on its own. Diet is the key.

I'm sorry you are feeling so down about this and letting diabetes control you. Perhaps if you start to keep a strict food diary, including portions. Test before you eat and then again 2 hours after your first bite. Write down these readings alongside the food you ate. If that meal spiked you above 2mmol/l from before to after, there is something in that meal that needs attention, either reducing in portion size or avoiding.

Have a look round the forum, there are loads of meal ideas and recipes. Don't worry about other type 2's you see eating mounds of the wrong foods. They may be on insulin or insulin promoting drugs, or they may be totally out of control but not care about it, or soon will be out of control with major health problems.. You must just concentrate on yourself. There is so much lovely food we can eat. Are you eating all the nice things like bacon and eggs, steak and salads, loads of cheese, mushrooms, eggs, olive oil, mayonnaise, berries and cream, coffee and cream?

Keep posting on here, ask questions, and rant if you have to. We will all listen and try to help.

Hi Tina, I was prescribed Metformin when I was diagnosed type 2 in mid Nov and the first thing I recall was a side effect .... "Stomach upset" The runs. As soon as i ate something my belly would start to rumble and within minutes the belly ache started and I had to find refuge in a loo. I'm glad to say though that only lasted around 5 weeks on and off. Now I feel fine. The other thing I found it did was to suppress my hunger. In other words I cooked a normal size meal but when I came to eat it I found I was leaving sometimes half of it because I felt full. I have lost around a stone since leaving hospital in November but that is for the good. I have learnt from the good people on here to ditch the carbs and I mean DITCH THE CARBS, then that way keeping control of the Blood Sugar levels is a lot easier. I don't have bread, pasta, rice or potatoes anymore and add more veggie stuff to make up for it.
Stick it out with the Metformin and I think you'll find it will get better.

Hi. I suspect you may have thought the Metformin was going to help a lot and sub-conciously started to eat a bit more.I'm afraid Metformin only ever helps a bit so diet remains key. Do keep a food diary and set a daily carb limit; perhaps 150gm day or whatever your meter and scales show is right for you. Yes, avoid root veg and have carrots raw not cooked (they're nicer raw anyway and it saves energy!)

When I first took Metformin my sugars did rise quite a lot then they settled back down again... After being on the Low Carbs and high fat diet .. just replacing all my low fat foods with normal fats .. I have good bs control and have been taken off of the Metformin.. So get back in control .. food diary and testing .. then hope you will gain your control again and come off the Metformin, I found they made me feel very unwell. !
