Hi Nicola Anne,
Having not posted on here for a while, your post caught my eye as like you, I am 5ft10 and before I was diagnosed was 13 stone. So although I knew I was only a little overweight, I didn't think it bad enough to do anything about it. In the years leading up to this I was always around 9 stone though, so for me that was too big for my slim frame. Anyway, how I did it - well, after being diagnosed I knew I had to cut down my portions, which has always been my downfall. Although I didn't eat particularly badly, I ate too much and have always had a big appetite. Like many others here, I found cutting back my carbohydrates particularly useful. So now I have a half portion of what I used to have but do not worry about fats like I used to. I still can't give up my two rounds of toast of a morning so instead, I have changed to Burgen soya and linseed bread and now I have peanut butter instead of margarine (the peanut butter also contains protein, which is good to have with carbs as it slows down the absorption of them). Good low carb foods to eat are:
All lean meats, fish, chicken, cheese, eggs, salad, avocado, olives, natural greek yoghurt. Most vegetables and nuts are a good option but obviously they do contain some carbohydrate, best ones are broccoli, cabbage, spinach, courgette, green beans, cauliflour. Root vegetables like carrots, suede and potatoes etc do have more carbs. For nuts, I go for brazils, almonds, cashews. The best fruit to have is berries. If you can't avoid junkfood, try to make it healthier - add some salad or veg to it. Have less rice and more meat in a Chinese or Indian, leave some of the bread if having pizza and so on. Try to choose less sweet dishes - egg foo young is a good one, or chop suey. Of course, you should always monitor your levels as what works for one person may not work for another, and please follow your medication plan carefully. Anyway, you see what I'm getting at, I hope this helps, it took me a long time to figure out what I could eat so I hope you have an easier time of it and good luck!
All the best, Tweetypie
