Lost hypo warning signs

Hi Unclebob

It's my guess if you are using Lantus just once a day that you are injecting a fair amount of bolus Humalog to keep your bg levels ok. I had exactly the same problems as yourself but at the time I didn't know too much about using insulin to carb ratios. Because of hypos I started to test more frequently and also got hold of insulin pens that would deliver in 1/2 unit increments to see if I could fine tune my doses a bit better. I also changed from Humalog to Apidra and that helped.

Last year I changed to Levemir and injected that twice a day just to see if my control was better or the same. I felt that Levemir gave me better awareness so could be worth your while in asking your dsn to change you to that first before using animal insulin. If you inject your basal twice a day, you'll end up needing less bolus insulin so your hypo situation should improve. Also find out from your hospital about carb counting and using ratios for bolus insulin.

I''m with Carbsrok on this one, porcine insulin is the closest available to natural human insulin and would more than likely be your best bet. On Lantus I felt every up and down, but often felt hypo when I was not. What a blessed relief it is to be on insulin that is "insulin" and that actually does what I expect it to; if things go awry, there's always a logical explanation for it, human error :D

As for hypos, less of them and normal old-fashioned warning signs of slight nausea, hunger, short temper, & confusion. I can usually recognise a hypo is imminent at around 4.1,even though I feel ok, I just get a sense that i've got to check my BG, and my instinct is usually right. I feel safer generally, and especially at night.

I take Porcine Isophane in an unequal split dose, and porcine neutral with meals, the neutral has a very gentle action resulting in less hypo risk. Often slated for it's delayed action as it means a short wait between injecting and eating,20-30 mins, I don't find that a problem, and if I inject it straight before a meal not found it makes much difference, but then I'm a slow eater anyway :)
