Low blood sugar and migraines

Hi

I was wondering if any of you with blood sugar knowledge could give me any advice.

I have for many years noticed low blood sugar. What I mean by this is that I get the shakes if I don't eat very regularly. I cannot skip meals, even morning tea!! To counteract it I try and eat a balanced diet, low go, protein with meals etc. I find I crave sweet things often.

I also suffer from migraine with aura. At times I have noticed that I havent gotten migraines if I have missed a meal or eaten too much sweet food! Recently I have had a lot of migraines and therefore have even tryin to prevent them and manage them better.

The most recent migraine I got was just before I was due for lunch (about 2-3 hours after morning tea). As I had access to a blood glucose monitor, i thought out of curiosity I would do a test. The result was 4.2mmol. After a half hour (and lunch) it was up to 7.7.

Is this normal? I know I am not diabetic just more wondering about hypoglycemia concerns??

Many thanks.

The 4.2 reading is a bit low but not unusual for a non diabetic. I do not believe it is low enough to give you problems but if you ever get readings lower than 4 you could well get the shakes.

It is not possible to give an opinion about the 7.7 reading since it was immediately after lunch. The reading would depend on how long after lunch, what you ate etc. It is usually recommended that you test 2 hours after eating and a reading less than 8.5 is considered ok.

Those BG levels sound to be within normal range to me.

I used to suffer from severe migraine. itr disappeared at menopause, although I do very rarely sttill get an aura, without pain.
It doesn't relate to blood glucose in my case, but i know it does for some people. might be an idea to keep a diary of blood glucose and incidencew of migraine. . i was told many years ago that sugar cravings could go eith low vitamin B levels. A vitamin b supplement isn't very expensive, so might be worth a try. I would never suggest getting blood glucose up above 7 to sort a migraine.
7 is too high!

Hi
I have suffered from migraines since I was 16 I usually can tell when they are about to strike because of an aura where i feel like I am on the outside looking in.. difficult to describe. They were a regular occurrence and always severe enough to halt whatever i was doing. I haven't had any in about 5 months now which is a rare but welcome thing.

I wasn't diagnosed with diabetes at the time of my last attack but you have got me wondering now. Next time I get a migraine I will test my blood glucose just out of curiosity.
