Hi. I have had a condition for about ten years. Occasionally, I get this shaky hands, sweating from my bald head in particular, increased heart rate, dizziness and on one occasion fainting while looking around a museum. I have learned that the fix is to eat sweet things such as ice cream or oranges and to drink a sugary drink. This stops the symptoms but leaves me feeling tired and sometimes bloated. Saw the doctor about this just once and he advised me to carry glucose but never mentioned Diabetes. Just had a blood test because I complained about pins and needles in my feet and the doctor (different one) discovered high blood sugar (48) which he described as pre-diabetes.
This is opposite to my long term condition and I am wondering if these could be linked? Is it possible to get low blood sugar and high blood sugar events? Should have asked the doctor but he seemed in such a rush and I didn't think quick enough. Any guidance would be welcomed. Thanks.

If your HbAic is 48 you are diabetic. Prediabetes would be 42-47. 48 or over is in the diabetic range. You should make another appointment to see a GP. The practice should have one who specialises in diabetes, ask the receptionist who it is and ask to see him/her.

Thanks, you're right. The doctor said 48 is technically diabetes but because it was on the cusp of diabetes I should get another blood test in January. Do you know, is the reading of 48 representative of my blood at a point in time or is more sophisticated like an accumulation over time?

If you have had Hypoglycaemia for years and started having hypers as well, you might as well look at the Reactive Hypoglycaemia forum.

I was diagnosed with prediabetic, then T2 diabetes. I had hypers, then hypos!
I am not diabetic!
Most GPs know nowt about blood glucose disorders.

Interesting. I need to do some research. Thanks for the input.
If you want to ask some more about any form of Hypoglycaemia, then do so on the RH forum.

My story is over fifteen years trying to get a proper diagnosis!
Got one now!

I see that Late Reactive Hypoglycaemia can be associated with stomach surgery. I had surgery for a duodenal ulcer about 30 years ago so maybe there is a connection. Do you control your condition with diet or is it more complicated than that?

Hi, again yes on both questions.
The food you eat has a direct effect and ' reaction' to how your endocrine system works!
A very, very low carb intake of carbs is necessary to get real control.
If it is any form of Hypoglycaemia, then your blood will have too much Insulin and that turns into visceral fat around your organs.
Your glucose is used up very quickly, like dumping it, and because your pancreas doesn't stop producing insulin. You get an excess!
It is scientifically complicated but treatment is eating protein and veg, not the starchy ones.
If it is RH, you will have to rethink the way you look at what healthy foods are to you.
It is a food problem and eating the right foods for you is the best treatment.

I often say to people who ask, that I am allergic to carbs and sugars.
Of course I'm not! But too many will make me ill. By too many I mean, more than roughly 50g a day!

Keep asking.

Have another word with your doctor. Ask him about the surgical induced Hypoglycaemia.
He/she won't have a clue! Then you might get a referral to an endocrinologist, who might have a clue! If you're lucky!

If you want to post in our forum, start your own thread, maybe one or two of us RH ers has missed the thread!

Whilst your symptoms are like thsoe from low blood sugars, have you actually tested your bloods when you felt this way? They symptoms you describe could also be attributed to a number of other conditions. I'm not disbelieveing anything you say, just trying not to jump to the natural conclusion, bearing in mind you are on a diabetes forum. If you were on, as a blood pressure or a stress forum, those symptoms could mean something completely different.

I agree that one should always keep an open mind but the only thing that has changed in my circumstances is that the doctor informed me that I had a high glucose reading in my blood. Fingers crossed My blood pressure is regularly checked and as of Monday was ok, I don't do stress and I don't feel ill. Thanks for your input. I have not used a forum before and I must say I am impressed with the kindness and concern shown by complete strangers. I am beginning to think that this type of specialist health forum where individuals can share experiences are probably better than seeing a Doctor.

As a forum regular and because of the rules we cannot give diagnosis or say that you have definitely got this or that.
We use our experience of what has happened to us and from reading up about a lot of information from sources that a GP couldn't give you or even be aware of.
We have an insight into personal symptoms that doctors tend to ignore or treat you as a type whatever patient.
It is an open forum with lots of really knowledgeable posters and ask a question someone will give advice especially dietary.
Of course, there are differing views on all aspects of blood glucose or hormonal imbalance conditions. That's because we are all unique.

But, I'm just weird!
