Low blood sugars after Gastric Bypass. Help please.

hello everyone, I do hope to get some support and advice from some of you on here, il try and keep my intro short as not to bore you all to sleep zzz lol ;) I'm 27 and in February 2013 I made a decision to have a gastric bypass, I have gone on to lose around 10 stone (although I'm still quite chunky) and I got my first job in around 6 years yay me :) for the last 9-12 months I've been experiencing "low blood sugars" and seemingly progressively getting worse and more frequent, lowest iv been is 1.2 and I went in to like a sleep coma. Iv had an appointment with endocrinologist who basically suggested reversal of my operation and that he didn't want to comment further or see me anymore as he didn't feel qualified with hypos and the bypass, referred me back to my surgeon who has said he will reverse my op in 3-4 months! In the mean time my doctor has signed me off work and work feel I'm a risk to be there. Most days I feel very unwell and tired. Been given arcabose but didn't see any improvement, now iv been basically left to just get on with it and I just wondered if there is any other tests medication or help I could be getting!? Anyway lots more to the story but il keep it there for now :) hope you're all still awake haha .

Hi, and welcome.

I'm so sorry you are going through all this, and still only 27. I can't offer any advice as I know little about gastric bypasses and the consequences. I just wanted to say Hello.

(You may be better starting a new thread with Gastric Bypass problems and low BS in the title, which may attract more experienced people to advise you)

Hi and welcome.

I'm so sorry to hear about your experiences.

And im also sorry to bombard you with questions, but:

When do you get these lows?
What is a typical day's eating?
What dietary advice have you been given following the bypass?
Do you follow it?
Are you diabetic? If so, what type?

Hi there isn't any set particular time I get them they can be in the middle of the night in the middle of the afternoon and first thing in the morning, before food, after food, after exercise etc - I follow my post bypass diet the best I know how, I have treats but the lows don't just come after that, I can have chicken casserole and have a low of 2.6 after . There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. I'm not diabetic I was tested for it years ago and told I was borderline, and tested more recently with clear results.

Thanks,

The reason i asked is because of the possibility of reactive hypoglycaemia.
Your answer suggests not, but you may find doing a forum search on the subject, to see if it rings any bells.

Beyond that, i'm sorry, i dont really have any suggestions, other than to encourage you to stick to slow release foods such as proteins, fats and vegetables, with the slowest release carbs you can.

I hope someone comes along with some better suggestions!

Yes, do have a look at the reactive hypoglycaemia threads, it is one of the main reasons for having RH is a gastric bypass.
I believe, that unless you are totally in control of your blood sugars, that any readings you have will give you no clue to what is happening.
Have you ever fasted for more than 5 hours and tested then?
What is your carb and sugar intake normally?
How and when do you test?

Thanks I will look on the forum better when I'm at pc tomorrow Iv not been given fasting thing which I thought was strange it's like no doctor endo etc are that interested as they don't have any knowledge on the situation, I try to check it as regular as possible the Strips for my monitor are expensive though :/

It is a very difficult condition to diagnose. Most GPs and some endocrinologists have not the expertise to recognize it!

Let us know how you get on!

Also look up on Wikipedia, don't bother with the NHS website!

Mind you I could be talking rubbish on what is happening to you!:(:)

Im sorry I can't offer any advice but I wanted to wish you well and I hope it gets sorted out for you sooner rather than later.

Ah thanks everyone, I just feel like I'm going round in circles I don't really want my operation reversed but I want nothing more than to feel better, it's affecting my moods, my relationship, my friendships...just seems like no doctor etc is really interested, hate being off work and sitting at home all day but I genuinely don't have the energy for much else lol x

Hi loola27,welcome to the forum, have you thought about speaking to the team who operated on you? There must be help avail' post op ? Dietician? Etc, i would suggest a shake that is balanced nutritionally, and post some q's on dr r bernsteins web page, all the best ,sending you (((((big hug)))))

Hi @Loola27

I found an article that suggests there are people who experience your symptoms 2 -3 years after surgery. and it is a recognised complication.
This article also suggests some possible treatments. Were you warned about this prior to surgery?

If you google, "hypos after gastric surgery" you will find a lot of articles.

Do keep us up to date with what is happening and I wish you well.

Hi thanks very much for that, no warning prior, all my surgeon said in June was its a very unusual illness/symptoms in people unless they had diabetes before surgery.
