I am T1 and VERY overweight. I am very keen to go low carb but I also suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease so have to watch my protein intake. Can I still go Low Carb?

Lorna

I am between stages 4 and 5. My levels have remained more or less the same for the past few years, I go to the renal unit 4 times a year, I have approx 25% function. I take medication for blood pressure, Cholesterol and and underactive thyroid.

Hi Lorna

It is possible to follow a reduced carb diet and safely manage your CKD. Losing weight and improving your diabetic control will also be beneficial to the condition as well as reducing your chances of other diabetic complications and improving your overall health.

Unless told otherwise by your renal specialist, protein intake of about 0.8 - 1g per kilo of bodyweight per day should be fine. Make sure you eat good quality protein such as lean meat, white fish, lentil, pulses, soya or tofu. You may already know that limiting your intake of phosphate rich foods is beneficial to CKD sufferers so watch your intake of things like oily fish, shellfish, nuts and cheese.

There is lots of excellent advice on this forum about typical low carb diets so do have a look around. What I would suggest though, is that you start off at about 50g of carbs a day - if you haven't already got one, buy a Collins Gem Carb Counter so you can look up the different food values. Test your blood sugar levels before meals and two hours after to see how different foods affect you.

If you have any questions or need more information then just ask as we are all here to help. Or do PM me if you prefer. And obviously, do consult your renal specialist if you're unsure about anything.

Best of luck

Thanks for your advice Mrs P, I have ordered the book from Amazon and am raring to go!

Hi Lorna
my T1 husband has CKD too. they wantedd to put him onto EPO for the anaemia, but in the meanwhile, I'd got him to cut his carbs and he's now improved to the point where EPO isn't necessary any more. EPO costs something like £75 a dose, so they are fairly pleased.
