My husband and I have been low carb eating for 10 weeks, successfully in terms of reduced blood glucose and weight levels. Store cupboards are full of the 'right' foods.

We have our 4 years old grandson coming to stay for 3 weeks. Usually we bake cakes so shall have to draw pictures instead! Is it ok to give him things like coconut and chopped nuts/ cashews? I am not expecting him to eat low carb at all, guess I am trying to limit temptation for myself. Any suggestions for a happy visit welcomed.

I think I would be wary of giving nuts to a young child they do not really chew stuff very well and could choke on them. Could you not do some low carb cakes as children really love to help with baking

Why don't you make some low carb cakes together? There's loads of recipes for them on the internet. At 4 years old he won't really know that some of the ingredients aren't the same as previously used.

I don't see why you can't continue your low carbing without changing what your Grandchild is used to eating. What are his parents expecting you to feed him? I would certainly ask their opinion on introducing him to cocunut and nuts.

My Granddaughter tends to try what I eat. We have a help yourself table and she will happily make a lettuce wrap. But our Grandson is a fussy eater and will rigidly stick to foods he likes. He will sit at the table and eat nothing if he can't have his favourite foods.

Yes, you will have to exercise self control and not be tempted by his higher carb meals and cakes, just as you would if you took him to a restaurant.

Thanks all. I shall have a look at recipes and also buy some individually wrapped cakes and fruit juice cartons. They are safe from me as I can psychologically compartmentalize them as "his".

Mum and Dad are happy so long as he eats (was very picky when younger and used to throw up his food). Sometimes he will surprise us by what he eats eg quite spicy food - his Mum is Thai, and the only 'food rule ' I have heard from her is "no chilli until they are 2". I'm just panicking I guess, and he certainly won't let himself ho hungry!

Nuts, unsalted are ok , except peanuts, small amount of coconut due to the fat content.

The occasional breakfast out can be good and find the right place (Beefeater) and children eat free. Grandchildren love this and I am happy with egg, bacon, sausage, toms etc. Ours is just a 15 min walk away so we all have a bit of exercise too.

I still give my grandchildren cake that I bake - don't really understand why you wouldn't to be honest

My grandson eats what he wants including loads of cake, cookies and what ever, this does not disrupt my low carb diet, mind you he is twenty two.
