Can some one help?

I want to attempt low carb again. Over the last 3 years of eating "normally" I have developed Fibromyalgia and depression, I wake anywhere between 3 and 10 times a night and I am knackered all the time. I beleive this is due to the carbs.

However, about 10 years ago I bought Dr Bernstiens book and low carb'd for 2 years. During that time my IBS got worse and worse. So bad that I couldnt leave the house. On top of this I had crippling back pain. I spend £1000 on a chiropractor to no avail. I asked 3 doctors (and the chiroprator) if this coudl be related to the IBS and they all said "no!!!!". I came off low carb and the back pain went and the IBS got much better. 3 months later went back on low carb. Back pain returned and so did the explosive bowels. So i went back to "normal" diet.

2 years ago I started to low carb again only to end up in hospital with suspected kidney stones. Hospital found nothing and dismissed me. I came off low carb and the pain went.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something specific I was eating that could cause this? I want to go back to low carb but I dont want to risk that again.

How low carb did you go? why not try to lower your carbs gradually and see how that works for you

Hi, my Mum and Nan get back pain with their IBS episodes so I think it can be connected.
My bowels do great on LC  as I have discussed in another post, so I am suprised to hear you suffer so much with it. Maybe at first, as any change in diet can cause a change in toilet habits. As Carol suggests, maybe you should start gradually and don't forget to drink plenty of water

Good Luck :D

I had bad IBS, not from LC, but too much meat. So if you switch from carbs altogether and make it up with meat you could have issues. Make sure you have plenty of low GI veg. Also, although it's still carbs, have some bran at brekky within your carb allowance if you can tolerate it. Since having bran at breakfast, on advice from doc, my IBS disappeared and never returned

Thanks Jane, Carol, Grazer.

Carol - i did go prety low carb so i think i will try gradual or just keeping below 130g or something. also maybe follow Grazer's advice and not have so much meat. Will see how it goes.

Good to know I am not on my own with the back pain thing Jane. After all the doctors treating me like I was stupid I di begin to wonder.

Could it be that when you low carb you are deficient in some vitamin, nutrient, amino acid or something so perhaps a multi vitamin may help.

Its just a suggestion, I rarely go below 80g or 90g a day now usually more and have never to my knowledge gone below about 60g of carbs a day so perhaps an under 40g a day man/woman may be able to help?
