Anyway now the wife is hassling me saying the diet is unhealth etc etc, tried to tell her that sugar between 4-7 must be better than 5-16, health benifits in later life surley outway any bad effects of low carbing and losing 2 stone soon must be good but theres no convincing her, also she says my cohlestral and fats will go up, ive tried to tell her they should go down but i cant get throught to her, Im i right in saying all this? hope i am, cant wait to show her the replies.

There has been a study, discussed here, that demonstrates that, in the short term, a low carb diet will help with your BG control, weight loss, and cholesterol levels. Your wife is quite right to be concerned that there may be a downside to your diet, however you need to offset those concerns by ensuring that all your nutritional requirements are being met.

You're quite right, squirrel.

The myths surrounding low carb diets are very hard to dispel, partly because they have been consistently reinforced by misinformation and poor science over the past 30 years.

A few simple truths might help you make your case.

80% of the cholesterol in your blood is made by your liver in response to carbohydrates. A diet low in carbohydrates and higher in fat will almost certainly improve your cholesterol ratio.

Cholesterol is a very poor indicator of heart disease risk. Triglyceride levels are a far more accurate measure. Triglyceride levels rise in proportion to carbohydrates consumed.

Elevated insulin levels are perhaps the greatest risk to health. They will elevate cholesterol and triglycerides, they will promote weight gain and are perhaps significant in increased risks of cancer. Raised insulin levels also encourage the kidneys to retain salt which in turn promotes water retention and increased blood pressure.

The proof is in the eating. Ask your wife to join you in a reduced carbohydrate experiment for 3 months. Measure her weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides before and after. Then she'll see you're right!

All the best,

fergus

There is No evidence that a low carb diet( even REALLY low) can do you any harm. In fact as long ago as 1928 it was shown that living for a whole year on ONLY fatty meat and fish is perfectly healthy.
Trouble is that much of what is said about diet han't been tested. It's amazing how powerful rumour can be. Not to mention the advertising. How many people are comvinced that whole grains are healthy and essential and that fats are bad? Bot of these are wrong. Raw whole grains are not only indigestible, but contain the toxin lectin, also found in red kidney beans. And fat is essential for your system to function properly. also for vitamins, A,E and K.
Keep on with your low carb diet. encourage your wife to join you.
Remember. Robert Atkins died as a result of a head injury sustained in an accident. Before which he was a healthy man in his 70s. Still practising medicine and walking about 2km to work in New York every day. He'd done the low carb thing for a long time.

I can understand your wife's concerns, I have also been brainwashed to low calorie, low fat mentality as long as I have lived. It is so ingrained into us, I would say like worst kind of propaganda and it is very difficult to break out of it. I;m still struggling about having cheese and cream in the fridge... Roasting chickens with skins on... But since diagnosis about 4 weeks ago and extensive research I decided to give it a go. I had all my blood tests and am due a second set in a month so that is going to be my next step. personal evidence... So ask your wife to do what was suggested and give it 3 months herself and have before and after blood pressure, blood works and such done. You may have a convert in your hands then...

Agreed. It's likely that your LDL will go up, but it's even more likely that your HDL will go up more (proportionally) and your trigs will plunge, thus making the LDL non-harmful. Meanwhile your BG and BP will drop, you may be able to reduce medications and best of all your food will become tastier and more nutritious.
