Conclusions: Exceptional glycemic control of T1DM with low rates of adverse events was reported by a community of children and adults who consume a VLCD. The generalizability of these findings requires further studies, including high-quality randomized controlled

edit to add: not perfect I realise but i thought it interesting to see a study at all of low carb in type 1 as they are usually type 2.

Interesting but
- study was small. Only 316 participants
- results only mention HbA1C as a indicator of success. No mention of Time in Range or general quality of life - mental health is as important as HbA1C.
- dubious time following VLCD: 2.2 +/- 3.9 years ... so some people have been following VLCD for negative 1.7 years
- results based on a self selecting survey made to prove the value of VLCD. You would not be a member of Type1Grit if you were not successfully following VLCD. Those who struggled with the diet would not be a member of the group to complete the survey.
- comparison with average T1 rather than those who successfully maintain similar “exceptional glycaemic control” with less restrictions on diet. Yes, it is possible.

Thanks for sharing this. Interesting that they had 4DKA hospitalisations and 2 hypo ones. I would have though it would normally be the other way round for T1s. Also interesting the poor relationship may had with their care team, parents in particular being afraid to tell their teams that they were very low carbing their kids. Let's hope that this study leads to the creation of a larger trial which might change the attitude of diabetic teams to low carb. (Study was refreshingly honest about its limitations.)

I was assuming that meant 2.2 was the average and 3.9 is the standard deviation?
(eg if you have 10 people, 9 with values of 1 and 1 with 11, you'd get an average of 2 and a SD of about 9.5, so 2+/-9.5)
