Hi all!

Me again, wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for low carb bread? I used to use the Low Carb Food Company but they are no longer operating ( it seems) I tried the m and s bread which I'd called super bread. This didn't spike me after 2 hours..but it did at 3...

So wondering if anyone has any recommendations for Low Carb bread? :)

Cheers,
Jake

Hi-Lo works for me. Just 5g per (smallish) slice, which equates to 15%.

Hi Barry,

Thank you I will take a look!

Looks like net carbs is around 2g or so per slice minus the fibre content so not bad all round!

Cheers,
Jake

Fear not Jake.
You can still get the exact same bread as the Low carb food company.
Different company but the same product, and free delivery over £20

If you have an hour you can make your own very low carb bread.

Basic recipe: 200g milled flax seed (Aldi or Tesco brand is cheap and good), 2 tsp baking powder, pinch of salt, 200 ml hot water.

Mix the whole lot in a bowl until you can take it out like a sticky but intact dough (maybe need more milled flax or water to get it manageable).
Put in a pre-warmed oven at 180 C for 45 min. Bread ready to eat.

It has quite a dense texture and reminds me of German sourdough bread. Taste is neutral but you can add grated Parmesan, garlic, herbs, spices as long as the dough is not falling apart. To make it more open or fluffy add egg white and less water.
When I make this with cheese it doesn't last more than a few hours.!

Edited to correct the autocorrect of livlife!

2 supermarket options at £2.00 to £2.20 a loaf
Hilo from Sainsburys
Livlife from Waitrose
In the pic, HiLo is green packet in the left, Livlife on the right. Both small but filling

In the last 10 years I have tried many different kinds of breads, freshly made too. Nowadays I am eating half slice of sourdough, looks okay for now, until I get tired of eating sourdough!

I am a bread lover so feel your pain .... I was very suprised by the taste and texture of Srsly bread, I have tried their rolls and the seeded bread and its great (obviously not quite bread as I know it but great) .

One thing I can say is that Srsly Fruit bread is amazing ........ I used to eat Soreen, fruity five and love a hot cross bun, but Srsly fruit bread is a fantastic substitute to get your fix at only 2gsm carbs per slice (albeit small slice)

One slice of Warburton's No Added Sugar wholemeal bread from a 400g loaf is 9g and has a negligible effect (if any) on my BG...but, of course, we all react differently.

Does this spike you?
Not really. It goes up by 1.5 mmols at 2 hours but I don’t know how quickly it comes down as I haven’t tested beyond that. I also haven’t tested on its own as usual have butter, cold meat or cheese in a sandwich I think I might try BG 2 hours after eating just the bread

My pet fave low carb topic! I suggest you go to the Skipton Low Carb website (quick search on Google will get you there) and go to the recipes section (if
you're into home baking, that is).

The low carb yeasted bread maker bread is just like a loaf from a good quality bakers' and I've made it many times. It has Oat Fibre in it (NOT Oat flour which is carby) and it has vital wheat gluten in it to give the dough a stretch and the finished loaf a bread like spongy texture. Vital wheat gluten has very few carbs. The finished bread has 2g carbs per slice, and is delicious. Highly recommended, and it doesn't spike my blood sugar at all.

Can easily be made without a bread maker, but needs to be carefully kneaded and risen prior to baking if not using a bread maker.
