Low carb Breakfast

Messages

Having finally cracked the reason for my weight gains and uncontrolable BS, cutting back on carbs as been a challenge.

Especially for me as breakfast has always been so important and largely porridge driven. So finding that porridge caused me such a spike far worse than neat sugar even. I really struggled to find an alternative.

Everything I tried seemed to have similar bad effects, only Shredded Wheat seemed to be good, but come on the thought of a life time eating only Shredded Wheat, sometime the cure is worse than the illness.

Then stumbling through bargains at Tescos I found Lizis Granola with its claim to be the first company to have the GL of its products measured rather than calculated. Ever the doubter and because it was half price I tried it. Thinking yeh right it will taste like it looks cat litter like, and send BS into orbit.

I began testing and wonders will never cease it did exactly what it said on the pack little or no effect on my BS, and it actually taste lush.

What a find something sweet, tasty and no effect, hence my excitment, and no Im not a salesman for the company even if its Welsh but maybe I should have done a deal on commission before writing this as its not cheap.

Take a look at the website has other products and recipes lizis.co.uk/index.php/my-story

Hi Barry,

All the usual cereals cause me to go into double figures at breakfast time - even Shredded Wheat.

Yes - others have had similar great results with Liz's granola. You will find quite a lot of references to this product by searching on this and other diabetes forums regarding the usefulness of this product to diabetics.

Here is a link to some tests that I carried out on Lizi's granola:

Here's an interesting fact- fat slows down the absorbtion of carbs. Maybe try the granola with <<gasp>> full-fat milk?

Gonna grab a bag of this stuff myself...

Thanks taking the trouble to point out the links all very interesting. It always surprises me how the body reacts differently to the same thing.

Haven't found much so far that hasn't spiked my sugars so Im relieved that there is something. So far I have managed to control my BS by reducing portion size and finding that porridge and bread was my real problem and avoiding them all together.

I have my next clinc mid March so it will be interesting to see how all this has impacted, I take it I can expect to get a bollocking off my nurse for going the low carb route, but hey thats nothing new they definately seem to like the stick rather than carrot approach. All I know listening to the excellent advise on here, I feel better, I train better, my weighs dropping and my sugars are virtually normal. No which approach I prefer.

Thanks again

Me too, Patch! :D

I think the full cream would help as well.

I love my yoghurt, fruit and seeds etc which I usually have but sometime crave a crunch - if you know what I mean?! Something to get your teeth into.

I had low-fat natural yoghurt and rasperries for breakfast today but for a change added 20gms of Lizi's Original granola for the first time. It was quite delightful!

However, I didn't test so can't tell you what it did to my blood glucose levels.

That small amount of Lizi's granola is the first cereal of any type that I've eaten for ages. Moreover, I hardly ever eat bread or potatoes these days either - occasionally a very small piece of bread and occasionally potatoes as chips when I'm eating a beef or gammon steak - both in restaurant situations.

Glad I seem to have triggered some interest. It makes a pleasant change to be told what you can eat rather than what you can't.

Love the idea of the full milk bought some the other day by mistake god it was good on the Granola, but had that nurses voice ring me ear, yes Mr Jeffreys your sugars are down but what about your fats.

Although hoping the weigh loss will also help there, but think nurses, Gps, like car mechanics have to find a problem somewhere.

i found also that if i have a meat like pork, beef corned beef even oily fish i can handle more potato. however if its chicken or turkey its back to the celeriac. conlclusion fat in the meat does slow the absobtion. last week full mixed grill from beefeater with chips and salad double jamesons then straight after walked 2 miles back from restaurant. 2 hours later da da 5.4. getting a bit of my life back . however last week got a bit cockey at my daughters birthday party. 3 mini scotch eggs and a bite size sausage roll meeeeeeeeeeeeeeow in the 10s. going back to the granola i found all flavours gave me excellent readings apart from the pecan and treacle one. waitrose stock all the flavours. try the chocolate one with greek yogurt for a pudding QUALITY!

Wow! That was a result!

Glad to hear that you are liking the Lizi's granola.

Liz's Granola sounds the biz only trouble for me is that i live in NZ and i have never came across it here. I usually have porridge in the morning, sometimes with a sweetener and when i tested 2 hours later i was spiking to 16! I tried it with cinnamon sprinkled on top and it lowered a little but still spiking to 15. All cereals seem to be the same for me so the low carb discussions are interesting and hopefully i can get some good ideas on here.

I posted about this on another thread. Try a search for "homemade low carb granola" and you should come up with "Mr Breakfast". There are no cereals in his mix and as I can't do oats in any way this was a great find for us. PM me if you need help.

Hi KiwiScot - It's good to meet you!

Yes - when I started testing that was the first lesson that I learnt ! All the usual cereals spiked me - i.e. porridge, All Bran, Weetabix, Shredded Wheat, Optivita etc, etc. My readings always soared straight into double figures. However, I've never recorded a reading as high as 15 and 16 but must have been there when my HbA1c was high at 9.4%.

These days it's mainly grilled bacon and tomatoes for me - occasionally with mushrooms and/or egg. Occasionally, mushroom or cheese omlette or someting similar. Or, maybe, low-fat yoghurt with berry fruits sprinkling on a around 10g (two teaspoons) of Lizi's granola - that's nice.

Good luck with your improvement programme.

Best wishes from the UK - John

Hi again KiwiScot,

I'm quite happy with the grilled breakfast and because of that I don't eat the Lizi's Granola very often - generally only when my "cook" is away from home. Sprinkling a couple of teaspoons onto yoghurt is good together with berries.

The home-made granola recommended by Alison sounds just the job and I intend to give that a go some time.

Best wishes - John

Hi Kiwiscot :)

I will put the low carb granola recipe that I was given on to the recipe thread. You can adjust it to taste and put in what you fancy but it is a good base to start from. :D

Thanks Synonym, its very much the same as the one i got from clearwater which i made up yesterday and tried, it was fine and no spike! which i always get with cereal. I couldnt find pecan, almonds and walnuts in chopped form so i had to get into them with a meat tenderiser  But what i have found already is that in the 3 days that ive cut down on carbs by having no cereal, bread, potatoes etc my BG count is excellent for the first time in a decade, having between 4 and 5.5 before meals and under 8 2 hours after, i cant remember ever have such good results. What i need to do is get into the recipe section to keep a varied diet going, esp what to take in a packed lunch to work with me. It was always sandwiches so i need some good ideas on that. Thanks again

Great news about the improved results!

What about meat, fish or cheese for lunch with a mixed box of salad items for lunch?

John
Ive started doing that john, i had some chicken drumsticks and salad. So far i havnt missed having bread at lunch time and i have not had any bread since low carbing. I made a box of alisons granola recipe and its a great start to the day and my sugars dont spike at at all. I have noticed that my first reading in the morning before eating is always higher than my last reading before bed :) but thanks to this forum ive found out its probably dawn phenomenon, which is good to know as i couldnt understand why it happened! I really need recipes for meals etc so i dont get bored with it so any pointers would be appreciated folks
