Hi, this is my first post and I’ve looked online but haven’t really got any insight from it. I’ve been trying to eat reasonably low carb for the past 5 weeks,no potatoes rice pasta or bread, but occasionally indulging in squash and legumes. Things were initially pretty good blood sugar wise, and I stopped taking my meds (Viktoza -which I can’t get anyways, jardiance and metformin). Well towards Friday my levels were starting to come up and now this weekend my sugars are running high, as in no food till lunch but sugars 8.4, after a carb free lunch 9.5, after a stroll and before my tea 9.4! I’m also blooming famished, all I can think of is food. I’m wondering whether I was too hasty dropping all the meds and what I should do? I’m struggling to hear myself think over the grumbles in my tummy.

Welcome @Cornerskid
Can you give us a little more detail about what your meals are , I'm puzzled why you should be hungry , a well designed low carb or keto diet usually includes plenty of calories. What we cut out In the form of carbs we usually more that compensate for by increasing the amount of fats and proteins

I think you might have been a little quick to drop all the medication.
Normally people reduce them a little at a time until they know how much (if any) they still need.
As I read it your low carbohydrate eating plus your medication gave you good results.
This doesn't mean that dropping all meds will give you the same results, unfortunately.

I’ve been skipping breakfast as I’m bored of scrambled eggs and I can’t really think of what else to eat.

Yesterdays lunch was 4chipolata sausages and veg (carrots broccoli mushrooms and peas)

Tea was a turkey and boiled egg salad.

I nibbled on some almonds and Brazil nuts throughout the day.

I think you are right regarding the meds, might reintroduce the metformin and see if that helps

Thank you for you input everyone. I’m sorry I’m not used to using the forum and couldn’t find how to get back to check replies

That sounds low in fats. Its the healthy fats (from meat and dairy and olive oil) that keep us full.
Try eating your nuts as part of your meals, and maybe adding some cheese or olive oil as dressing to your salads and veg.
You'll still be low carb, just not so hungry

That lunch is probably low carb, but it depends upon how much carrot and peas you ate.
Unlike broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage they can spike some of us more than you may expect - but I'm sure you tested that meal, right?
Some similar veg that I find better are: swede, celeriac, green beans (french beans or runner beans), mange tout.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but your meals seem to be quite low fat. If you eat some fat then for some of us at least, it helps the body get 'fat adapted' faster and with less difficulty.
Once fat adapted your energy levels go up and you don't feel really hungry again since even the slimmest of people carry several weeks worth of easily accessed calories around in their body fat.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I’ll try to include more healthy fats, my glucose monitor is on the blink. And it needs replacing, it’s working very intermittently. I need to look into it. Maybe I’ll contact the diabetic nurse at my gp .
