Low Carb Diet and Insulin

Sorry if this is long winded. I have been diabetic since 1999. I started off controlling my diabetes by diet only, quickly moved on to increasing doses of Metformin, the basal insulin was added and am currently taking 40 units of Novorapid pre meals and 40 units of Lantus in the morning. I only take one Metform (500 mg) in morning as I finally told my diabetic nurse I was not prepared to put up with the awful side effects caused by taking 3 a day.

My question is this .....if I start eating low carb how much insulin do i take as every time i've mentioned this to diabetic nurse, doctor and even specialist at hospital it has been met with a very robust YOU MUST EAT CARBS AND YOU MUST NOT STOP TAKING YOUR INSULIN (including never missing a dose)

I am getting so desperate my insulin seems to have less and less effect no matter how many units i take I'm still putting on weight (currently 14.7 stone) and i don't eat particularly well.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

It would help to have some idea of your current diet and pre/post meal glucose level.

Lowering your carbs intake will definitely means lowering your insulin to prevent going into hypo. Those with experience in the dietary/insulin adjustment will come along to provide you some guidance.

hi there @allsaintsupton
welcome to the forum !!

your blood sugar results are the key to this.

hopefully as you are on an MDI insulin regime you are testing at least 6 times a day.

are you keeping a log book of your results that you can show your care team ??

I find that I make adjustments to my doses based on thorough testing and recording of results over time and then titrating doses accordingly.
