LOW CARB DIET - FAT OR FICTION

Thanks Ollie, I think this has been posted before but no harm in another airing!

Yes - I think it is well worth watching reassuring and well researched Why oh why no UK version yet?

I happened upon this episode of Catalyst with now journalist Dr. Maryanne Demasi - (who has a doctor of philosophy in medical research) - broadcast in Austraila in late 2014. It includes interviews with researchers, nutritionists/dieticians, physicians, patients, and athletes. And also gives a nod to this "12 Points of Evidence" article written by Richard D. Fienman, Ph.D., "Dietary Carbohydrate Restriction As the First Approach In Diabetes Management: Critical Review and Evidence Base", that we hopefully have all read and shared... http://www.nutritionjrnl.com/article/S0899-9007(14)00332-3/fulltext

This Catalyst program was very well done, and only 30 minutes in length. I agree with the original poster, well worth the time to watch so am bumping this topic up.

One of the things I most appreciated is the emphasis on eating whole foods including lots of vegetables. Protein and fat sustain us and provide nutrients we need, but vegetables - (fruit and berries too for those diabetics who can tolerate them) - are also important and provide additional nutrients our bodies need over time.

Ah. I just read about another programme the Catalyst team made about statins, which was heavily attacked and then pulled by ABC. It was clearly a good programme. If you're interested, see the Malcolm Hendricks blog ( he's a UK doctor who criticises the medical establishment arguing well) on Catalyst. It's *very* enlightening.

In short, on the basis of reading that, this Catalyst programme is probably very good. I'll try and watch it.

Lucy, wish I could have watched that program before it was pulled. My understanding is that everyone who was interviewed agreed with the program content. In my research about statins, I've learned that it blocks the CoQ10 pathway, increases diabetes risk, and peripheral neuropathy risk. The only argument that I've read that gives me pause in completely ruling them out is the reduction of arterial inflammation, but my hope is that I can do the same and better with diet and the right combination of nutritional supplements. Oh, and I like Malcolm Kendall too. :)
