A pioneering doctor from Southport, best known as the Low Carb GP, has been included once again on a list of the top 50 most influential GPs in the UK. Dr David Unwin was placed at number 26 on the Pulse annual Power 50 list for his work providing hope to patients with type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes. He also featured in last year's list, in ninth place. The GP publication referred to Dr Unwin as the "figurehead of a movement that is exerting a considerable influence in healthcare". Dr Unwin has worked closely with Diabetes Digital Media to develop and promote the benefits of the award-winning Low Carb Program. His recent work also includes writing a nutrition e-learning module for healthcare professionals. This was made in collaboration with Diabetes.co.uk, and is entitled 'Type 2 Diabetes - A Low GI Approach'. It looks at how people with type 2 diabetes, who follow a low glycemic index (GI) diet, can significantly improve their condition. The module was published by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and was lauded by Lord Balfe, a key figure in European and international parliamentary affairs and Honorary President and Global Patron of NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition and Health. Last year, Dr Unwin helped to develop Diabetes UK's new dietary guidelines and, in March this year, he was presented with the Diabetes UK Primary Care Poster prize. He has also made significant financial savings at his Southport medical practice, having rolled out the low carb approach among his patients with type 2 diabetes. In 2017/18 he saved the practice a total of £57,000 on medications for the condition. Another amazing achievement of his, is seeing remission of type 2 diabetes in 68 of his patients - a feat that used to be thought of as impossible. Since beginning to advocate this way of eating in 2013, Dr Unwin believes he has "probably done more good online than in 32 years of face-to-face medicine" The full Pulse Power 50 list is available here. If you are interested in reading more about the work of Dr Unwin, you can view his in-depth presentations from 2017 and 2018.
