Ok i have read lots and lots on the subject on this forum.
I would like to start "reducing" my carbs . I was taught to carb count in 1980 ( 6 fat chips =10grams lol) , so im obviously gona need some help !!
Is there anyone out there that can give me some BASIC help on what general foods i can eat or should be avoiding ?
Please keep in mind that, I only want to "reduce" my carb intake for now :
I am currently changing my insulin types and amounts and my BS is literally all over place.I have quite a few complications, including sight and walking problems, which can make shopping a little difficult. I usually shop for meals on a daily basis with my husband when he gets home from work & I also have two teenagers to feed.
Please please please dont ask me to go away and read any books

If i can improve my BS just a little then i might feel better ( in body and mind) and be able to then take carb counting further , but its gota be small steps for me to start.

Sorry to be so difficult.

Hi Chez, a new part of the forum has been started for this, the answers your looking for maybe already in Here worth a look see anyway

Wow, if only it was that simple. I know my carb ratio and I certainly can't keep good control by eating what I like. Far from it in fact. Hence why I low-carb.

Apparently my carb ratio is 8 : 1 ( as this is based on what insulin i take now, should i be reducing it or something, sorry completely dont get it )

I found this : in general is it right ?
Non-Carbohydrate Foods
You May Eat As Much As You Like

Meat Poultry & Game,
Fish
Dairy Products ( not milk)

Low Carbohydrate Foods/Some of these must be restricted :
Vegetables
Fruit
Nuts

I rightly assumed that Chez had a lot of common sense and ate within moderation anyway.
I eat what I like ie no food is out of bounds but I do make sure it is in moderation and all carbs are counted and insulin taken to cover the food eaten.

Its ok Sarah, I got that bit and yes you assume right :D not sure about the common sense , feeling a bit dumb at the mo LOL, but i do eat within moderation a "healthy" diet

Hi Chez,

I didn't mean to imply that you didn't know the boundaries of moderation or that you wanted to go and indulge in sugary treats! What I meant was that I have found that in order to maintain excellent diabetic control, I have had to drastically cut out many of the things traditionally considered 'healthy' for a diabetic - i.e. starchy carbs including bread, pasta, potatos, some fruits. And that even if I did match the amount of insulin to these foods, my blood sugar levels would spike and fall. It has therefore been beneficial to me (and many others on this forum) to cut right back on carbs. Hope I have not caused any offence.

Katie.

No worries Katie, I'm not striving for excellent, just a few lower BS's would be nice using basic carb redusing. I will worry about excellence later ;)

Hi Chez,
One thing that I found most helpful in starting to reduce my starchy carb intake but without going "cold turkey" on it, was to put on my plate the normal portion that I would have had, for example pasta, rice, cereals or potatoes, then remove one fifth. Make up what you have removed with either a healthier vegetable or extra protein. You will be reducing your carb intake by 20% and should soon start to see a difference in your blood sugar levels.

If that still doesn't bring the levels down to what you would like, then replace another fifth of the starch foods, etc. until you reach a level that you are comfortable with.
