Does a low carb diet have to be high protein? I am a type 1 and desperate to lose weight, a LOT, I like the idea of a low carb/less insulin diet but I have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease so have to watch my protein intake, can I do low carb and low protein?

No. It should be high-fat but (if you are doing it properly) not high-protein.

I eat less than 20g of carb a day, but get 18% of my calories from protein (and I exercise quite a lot). That means that the rest of the calories have to come from fat (in my case 80%, but if you eat a more reasonable number of carbs you can cut that down a bit).

I like Paul Jaminet's suggestion that you should get at least 600kcals from carbs and protein combined.

But obviously build your diet based on the protein intake recommended by your specialist.

Thanks "Borofergie", I will have to have a look in to it and try to find a low carb diet that will suit me. Me renal consultant has not pout me on a restricted diet as such, he just recommends that I watch my protein and potassium intake. The really restrictive diet for kidney patients is for when the eGFR is under 15% which hopefully is a long way off for me. #I am currently at 22% but was 26% for a long time I am hopeful that if I can get my HbA1c back down to below 7 then my levels will go up over 25% again
