Hi,

My hba1c is 93. It was 81 last year. I need to bring it down. I also weigh 181lbs and im 5'5 in height. Today i saw my dietician and dn and they suggest low carb approx max 130g carb a day, increase protein, start exercising and go onto myfitnesspal and tell it what weight i need to lose and go by the calories on there. I'm confused as the last time i looked into low carb it was low carb high fat- she said i didnt have to do this and that she herself did low carb low calorie. Myfitnesspal has given me 1390 daily calories. She also said not to log veggies or salads, or the odd piece of fruit unless its not part of a main meal. They want to refer me for a freestyle libre and a pump (tried dexcom just cant afford it) but i need to do the dafne course as the edward course i did was ten years ago.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice at all? I am really struggling with low carb and low calorie and today my eating disorder reared its head and i totally fell apart.

Any advice welcome xx

are you type 1 diabetic ???
then you shall be really careful if you want to go lower in carbs. Sorry I didn´t notice right away, my fault

WELL this seems to be a good plan , though I would say under 100 grams of carbs daily when your HbA1c is that high, if you use a meter and measure your morning blood glucose every morning, you´ll see if your level of carbs is at the right level, when your blood glucose measured first thing in the morning goes down under 6 mmol, you are on the right way...

by the way, the lower in daily carbs the faster most seems to lose weight... some even go down to a level of 20 grams of carbs daily... I haven´t done that yet myself but hope to do it for a longer period in the future..( to lose weight rapidly )

I put a scheme in here where you can see at what level the normal blood glucose should be , and tell you that most people can get there just by doing low or very low carb eating style (which usually also mean that one is also eating higher fat eating style; go for nuts; olives and avocados if you don´t want to eat very high levels of animal fats / milk-fat )
many looses around 5-10 kg in the first month on 20 grams of carbs daily..

note that only the green area is the truly normal blood glucose levels 50shades - Copy.png

the advantage of eating very low carb higher fats is that ones loses weight without being really hungry... which makes it much easier..proteins should be around 0.8 grams of daily proteins pro kg bodyweight

but being type 1 makes it a bit more dangerous to go low carb because you can also get to low you know I guess and that can become life-threatening

Hi. Low carb tends to mean different things to people injecting insulin. But some people will use ultra low carb as a way to smooth out the bumps in BG management. There is a T1 low carb program on this site I believe. Also on facebook the “Type one grit” group are regularly geting hba1c numbers below 40.
Low carb also works very well as a weigh loss diet on its own, that was the basis of the original Atkins diet. Generally you would just count carbs and not calories. Keep adjusting downwards until you start to see weight loss.
FYI, i use the MyNetDiary diabetics app. It costs, but not too much. You can log your BG along with a ton of other measurements. It will show carbs, calories, protein, fat etc. Best of luck
