I am type 2 diabetic controlling by the way of diet opposed to pills so i am on a fairly low carb and low sugar diet trying to keep carbs below 128mg and sugar below 30mg although by doing this i managed to reduce my blood sugar level to 6.2mmol i seem to be losing weight i am 5.1ft and i weigh 48.9kilo, this seems to be because i am not consuming enough calories some days, i am a vegetarian can anyone suggest a food that i can eat that in very high in calories but low in carbs.

I think you mean 128 g. I would try tree nuts. Very high fat and low carb. Pecans, almonds, cashews. Seeds too, like pumpkin, sunflower.

Hi Mae - Welcome aboard.

I can understand you don't want to lose too much more weight, as you must be quite slight. I'm 5ft 3in, and weigh exactly the same as you, so we must be a similar scale. Whilst we're both very slim, it seems we're still within a healthy range, which is always good to know.

You may not be 50 years old, but age doesn't affect the scores (for adults).

I've been rock solid stable at this weight (+/- 1kg at any time) for several months now, but the balance took a bit of achieving. I started by adding a few peanuts with/after my lunch. I dose them by the eggcupful, as it's so easy to just consume a whole load, and if I have too many, I end up with gippy tummy. When that wasn't quite enough, I added some cheese, and used mini Babybel as an easy to measure, consistent dosing method.

I'm not a great day to day measurer or weigher or foods/meals, but as a data monster, I needed to do this at the outset, in order to understand my body's reaction. I also chose to modify my eating around my lunch as I had sussed my breakfast, and enjoy what I was having, and I have so much variety in my evening meals it would take too long to achieve robust results. By recording all you eat etc., you can soon see where your nutrient/calorific balance is, then go about varying what gives you those levels and achieving a more varied diet.

I found balancing my weight far harder than losing it. For me, losing was a bit of a breeze, to be honest.

Good luck with it. I'm afraid it's trial and error, to an extent.

Hi,

I was/am in the same position as @AndBreathe I lost all my weight on low carb/higher fat, over 4 stones, to reach a BMI of 21. I really struggled to maintain this and stop losing but have been stable now for a couple of months. I started eating cheese every day (which I didn't eat before), some double cream in my one daily decaf coffee (which I didn't have before) and dare I say, a glass of red wine most evenings. All extra calories and no extra carbs. I would have eaten nuts but they make me sick :( It is a fine balancing act and requires a bit of effort to work out.

Thanks for all your replies, as a vegetarian i do eat cheese every day and i do probably eat around 50grams of mixed nuts every day for a snack, i have heard that unsalted peanuts are very high in calories, i am probably worrying too much doesnt help when friends keep telling me i am getting skinny. But what i say to them is when i was 19 years old i weighed 6stone 3lbs and now at 68 years i weigh 49kilos which i think is about 7.1/2 stone so i think i am probably about right.

I found some funny thing when I was losing weight. People are ready to comment on weight loss, sometimes in an complementary way, in a way they probably never would if you were gaining. I sometimes think they find the change on our appearance to be a concern. Sometimes I catually think they have been a little envious. How many of your friends tell you they'd like to drop half a stone, but just can't seem to?

To be honest I only had one person really upset me on my weightloss journey (even though plenty people told me I was getting skinny), and that was a retired lady GP who told me I looked great, but did I really think I'd be able to keep the weight off? Trust me, I could have been quite rude, but instead used it to motivate me to ensure I have stayed stable. I will be seeing here again in exactly 12 days (having not seen her since May) and I may have to ask her if I have really kept the pounds off. Curiously, this lady is quite trim herself, but her two sons, who are around my age are both extremely overweight and seem completely unconcerned.

Hey ho. As they say: "There's nowt as queer as folk."

My diabetes nurse yesterday described me as lean. That's the first time in my life anyone has said that. Nobody has said anything negative about my weight loss yet. Well, one guy I hadn't seen in about a month jokingly asked if I had AIDS, but I didn't take that as negative, just politically incorrect. I've found that the few people who had made comments about my being overweight previously are silent about my weight now.
