I have recently gone back to the Atkins low carb diet and I have found that my blood pressure has gone up significantly since starting mainly due to all the cold meats etc I am snacking on which are more or less nil carb but quite high in salt. Can anyone give me suggestions of low carb/low to nil salt snacks?

Thanks,

Ant

I had to go saltfree for a while, about 4 years ago, due to kidney problems. If you cook your own low carb meals, roast your meats and chicken, etc just dont use salt, use lots of herbs and spices and lemon or lime juice instead of salt.
Make sure you eat plenty of low carb veggies, they contain potassium which would help to lower blood pressure, avocados in particular, oh and nuts, like walnuts and almonds are heart and blood pressure friendly.

I was told not to overdo it with protein, to increase fat and vegetables. I am fine now, am using salt again.

I too went salt free due to kidney problems problem was it made no difference to my sodium levels in my blood. Mind you, I never was much of a lover of processed food 8)

How long have you been on it? It's quite unsual, I think, that your BP would go up.

Steve Phinney recommends increasing your salt intake on a low-carb diet (although not if your blood pressure is high):
when the human body adapts to low carb, the body becomes very efficient at excreting salt. That’s good if you have high blood pressure, or if you’re bloated and fluid overloaded. It’s fine to reduce that. But there is a certain amount of salt our body needs...

I’ve had people tell me, I tried that low-carb diet of yours and the scales went down. But I was so light-headed. If I took a hot shower I’d feel like I was going to pass out, because I was completely washed out. That diet’s worthless!

I’d say to them, would you try drinking a cup of bullion.

Thanks for all the comments. Borofergie, I was on the Newcastle diet for the prescribed 8 weeks and my BP went right down but it has gone really high since being back on Atkins. I have been back on low carb exactly 3 weeks. Like I said, I think it is mainly down to now eating processed meats like salami and ham etc. Maybe not but why else would it go up now that I am eating food again? I have cut back on the processed meats and I am hoping it settles down again otherwise I am sure my doc will put me back on the water tabs I was taking, which I hate as they make me go to the loo every half an hour!
