low carb making me tired!

Please tell me my body will get used to eating low carb soon! I can't handle the constant tiredness...my house looks like a tip because by the time I can be ***** to get out of bed, I barely have the energy to eat breakfast, pack my husband a lunch to take to work, get myself showered & dressed, run a load of laundry, do the previous day's dishes, and cook a hot meal let alone any other cleaning! AND I'm supposed to be writing......

This morning, we were out early for what we thought was a 9AM GP appt (turns out it's on Thurs!), came back to the house and crawled back into bed around 945 to read....fell asleep with my Kindle in my hands and didn't wake up again until 1145! Ran around like crazy making Dinner for my husband and packing him Tea to take to work (he worked 2p-10p today)....then had no energy to do anything else. Went out this evening to a meeting that started at 730 and was yawning by 9....got home about an hour ago and it's a struggle to keep my eyes open (to be fair, it's almost midnight. But pre-diabetes/pre-low carb if I slept in that late, I'd be awake til well after 1 or 2 am!)

Are you both testing? Eating enough?

A low-carb diet should not make you tired at all. Test to see whats happening.

When I first started low carbing many moons ago I felt very tired for about week but it then wore off. I know it sounds odd but I found that if I did some excercise and push through it I felt slightly better.
Good luck and persevere! :)

You nWill adjust.
i've been low carb for several years and although Ican get tired if Ido a lot, I can keep up with my small grandchildren on a normal day[ if any day is normal when caring for tinies!]. I'm 65

I felt awful and headachey for a week when I started and it may be what members here refer to as 'Atkins Flu' which did resolve itself,I found as long as I was getting enough sustinance and calories from fats and proteins I had all the energy I needed.

My thyroid is fine...it was from the blood test checking my thyroid level that the diabetes was discovered, actually, so I know that's not the problem, but thanks!

Hope it wears off soon. Today wasn't so bad, but I did have a hardboiled egg within 20 minutes of getting up so perhaps eating early helped!

Eat that egg with a pinch of good salt and some really good quality butter too.

Why salt?
Well, firstly salt and poached/Boiled eggs are best friends! :D and secondly, not sure on the science but Low carbing can lower your sodium levels(I believe) and I found I was getting painful cramps in my legs until I started salting my food again and since I've been fine.

Paul, I think I love you. I have been trying to work out why my leg cramps have started acting up in massive quantities and this might be the solution! (also a friend told me to drink Tonic water)

I get a swimmy head when I'm short on salt. It was Boro who pointed me in the direction of more salt when I was feeling wavy. I'm not so bad now but part of my bloods on Monday will be to test for sodium deficiency. I'm also hoping the low carbing has improved my iron levels given the amount of greens we eat now - we sub steamed green veggies for rice, pasta & spuds.

I hadn't thought about it being connected with lethargy though. I have been feeling very tired too, but we've been low carbing for four months so I thought I was over the change-over period.

Glad your thyroid is normal Becca. But then they told me mine was normal for 7 years and it wasn't. It's a case of 'define normal'

I was just wondering how many carbs you are eating and how many carbs did you used to eat? Also how long
you been low carbing.
I am looking to reduce carbs myself but not very low or even low but I guess any change in regular diets will affect us in slome way for at least a short time.

Er, well I never counted carbs before, but I always ate loads of Pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes. Now I tend to eat between 50-75g per day, though many days it's actually much lower than that...it depends on if I eat lunch at home or pack a wrap. I've been low-carbing since March.

Are you drinking LOTS of water?

Jane :)

Honestly...no. I do my best, but there are some days I have a morning cup of tea, a glass of squash or sparkling water with whichever meal my husband and I have together, but for the 8 hours he's at work I tend to forget to drink....and eat....though I now have set alarms for meals.

All I can say is that if low carb is making you tired you may be interested in learing why this may be the case. Could I refer you to Dr J McDougal MD? (He is on the Web) He advocates a starch diet low in saturated fats with proteins limited to plant sources. I am not the expert but you may want to look at this. It may be the right way for you.
