I have been on the LCHF lifestyle for 3 months and today had my diabetes review.
Bear in mind these results are in 3 months:
Weight down by 7.6kg
BMI down by 3.1
Blood pressure down from 120/80 to 112/70
Total Cholesterol up by 0.1
HDL up by 0.4
HbA1c 41 (5.9 in old money), down from 58 three months ago and 103 at diagnosis
Diabetes nurse very :D
To say I am chuffed would be an understatement
LCHF vindicated in my experience

  Nice one! I've had nothing but improvements on it too ! :D

A big pat on the back to you!

Absolutely brilliant!

out of interest, do you mind if I ask for more details about what you've been eating? How many carbs, what fats (eg are you sticking to the NHS "healthy" nuts, avocado, olive oil fats, or are you eating cream, cheese, butter, animal fats)? I'm just asking cos I'm doing lower carb eating as a type 1, am eating more fat (both types) & bit worried what effect it'll have on my cholesterol.

Thank you all, I am grinning like Cheshire cat today :)
Hopefully can stick with this lifestyle forever - that's certainly the plan!

Hi Vicki,
I have used both Viv's modified Atkins diet on here (thank you Viv) and the http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf to get my guidelines.
There is a video on that link too, called the food revolution, which is a little long but well worth watching. I have been eating loads of saturated fat as in fatty meats and butter added to my veggies. I haven't bothered counting carbs or calories mostly, but did check them twice in the three months on myfitnesspal when, if I remember rightly, it came out at 7% carb, 9% protein and 84% fat.. or something like that.. it was definitely fat heavy. Also, I eat lots of double cream, eggs and cheese. I would suggest you do your own reading and find a way that works for you. There are a couple of books written by Richard K Bernstein (himself a type 1 diabetic) which make interesting reading. I have been keeping a Diabetes Blog at http://lesleyanne2.wordpress.com if you are interested in having a look and in one post I list all the books I have read and am reading and have yet to read on the subject.
Good luck in finding what works for you.

yes very good, excellent even...

But...

does your diabetic nurse now know HOW you did it?

That's very important so that she realises that the NHS dietary advice wasn't working... and that LCHF is a valid diet for diabetics... :)

Thanks a lot Lesley, that's reassuring that you ARE eating lots of saturated fat but STILL have better lipid levels. It maybe depends on how much carbs one eats as to whether chol improves or not.
I'll have a look at the sites you list, I do have Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book but he pushes protein as the carb replacement mainly, at least that's the impression I got. I also didn't think I could stick to so strict a diet as he proposes - I'm on insulin so have to carb count, and record my food, insulin & BGs on sugarstats.com & it tells me I'm eating an average of 77g carbs per day this week, not the 30g he says I should.

Hi Paul and Susan

My conversation with my Diabetes Nurse went something like this

My diabetes nurse said I have excellent control of my diabetes and asked me what I was eating. I told her I had seriously cut back on my carbs.

She replied “OK, are you eating veg?”

I said “Yes, lots of green veg”

To which she replied “Wonderful.. keep doing what you are doing.”

Hi there Lesley Anne you have done really well! can I ask you where you got your diet from. I am struggling to lose weight after a bowl op last year. its hard to lose weight because I have underactive thyroid. My HBA1 c was 9.2 last week when it was checked and I know the results would improve if I could lose at least 2 stone. have you any advice to get me on my way.

Thanks all,

Julien, I don't know how you should eat for an underactive thyroid sorry, all I have done is cut out as many carbs as I possibly can and increased my fat intake quite considerably. If you look up Viv's modified Atkins diet in this forum it will give you a good grounding on what to eat.

I have noticed that my weight wil go down a bit then stall for a while then go down a bit more, I like to think that it's just my body repairing itself during the stalls, but the overall trend is down and I am fine with that.

Good luck with your efforts.

Lesley :)

Very very well done Lesley!
I'm due to go and see my DN in a couple of hours time and hoping very much for similar results to you. Was diagnosed in August 2012, last HB1ac in September, was supposed to be called back in January but they "forgot". I've been LCHF the whole time and my meter results are fine so fingers crossed.
My weight loss has similar pattern to you - goes down a bit, stalls, shows quite a big drop, goes up a bit but not back to where it was, stalls then goes down to lower level. Strange but I'm used to it now.
Keep up the good work!
Anne

It went very well thank you Lesley!
My Hb1ac is down from 111 on 21/08/2012 to 38 on 23/01/2013, fasting blood glucose from 13.4+ to 5.8 - she said I was "cured"!! The less good news was that my cholesterol is way up, (which is what she predicted) and there is NO WAY that I will ever go back on statins having had a really bad experience with them (pre-diagnosis). I do think that maybe I have been hitting the HF bit of LCHF rather hard so am going to cut down on that which may kickstart my weight loss again - I'm not too far off target.

Actually my DN is extremely clued up and knew exactly what I'd done and has been very supportive, prescribing meter and strips etc. The "cured" bit means that now I'm in normal range with my readings she can take me off whatever their list is called which gives them more money. I would lose the annual eye and foot checks but as at the moment I am not showing any damage I'm not bothered about that. Will have to buy my own strips but I don't think they would continue to prescribe whilst I'm in normal range and not on any medication. But I was given free choice as to what I wanted to do and she also gave me a printout of all my results since I joined this surgery in 2007. She recommended that I had an annual Hb1ac test.

We are hoping to move in the next few weeks which means I have to go to a new GP practice, otherwise I would stick with her. The care that I have received in the last few months seems light years ahead of what some people on this forum experience so I'm very grateful for that. I shall ask to be classified as cured - at least I shall lose the label.

I shall continue on the LCHF regime - usually under 50 carbs a day, absolutely no bread potatoes rice pasta pastry etc and no inclination to experiment. What I'm doing seems to suit me so I'll stick with it. I know in the past when I've done various diets to lose weight - and often had some success - it's the "oh I'll just have a little bit" that has done for me!!!!!

So, another success story :D

Anne
