Low Carb vs Low Calorie

Hello all,

Am a T2, diagnosed for approx 3 years.
In an attempt to lose some weight & get a bit healthier, I decided to try a low calorie diet.
In 5 weeks, I lost a total of 12lbs. Was also going to the gym 2/3 times per week.

Reading through comments on these forums, people were raving about low-carb & weight loss.
Ok, I thought, I'll give it a go.
After 2 weeks, I had PUT ON 5lbs (even though I was still being careful). Was still going to the gym 2/3 times per week.

Unimpressed, I'm going back to my low calorie (will still be using Atkins 'chocolate' bars to help with cravings though).

I might revisit low-carb when my weight comes down more.

It is not in my view one or the other but low carb in conjunction with calorie counting works just fine

Diagnosed type II 1998 2 x 80 mg Gliclazide, 4 x 500mg Metformin and 1 x 100mg Sitagliptin

Low carbing on its own will not aid weight loss if you are still eating too many calories.

Reduce carbs to control bg levels reduce calories (eat less) to loose weight

A combination of both has helped me to control my bg levels and loose over 5 stone (70lbs) in weight and more importantly to maintain that weight loss now for close to 4 years. :D

I agree. I combined the two. I eat a bit less of everything I was eating before diagnosis and in doing so have reduced my carbs (I'm not a low-carber) just enough to control bG and lose weight slowly and healthily. This probably sounds odd, but I helped myself by not shovelling food down as if it was an eating race but eating more slowly, enjoying it and giving my body the time to decide when I was full. I started 'top-down', in other words, what I was already eating was the starting point. Very simple and only took a short while to get 'sorted'... just the occasional pit-stop with the meter as advised by my Diabetic Nurse. So my diet has not changed, it's just smaller portions.

According to calculators, I eat about 250g carbs (roughly) per day, and I walk about three miles per day which is enough to make a difference for me. Current average bG 5.9 and down from 16st to 14st in about three months and no diabetic medications.

I'm low carbing and losing weight, but in low carbing I do eat a lot less than before so who can say which thing is taking the weight off ? I intend to increase my carbs a little in 2 months or 11lbs when I'll be happy with my weight, I've lost 3stone3lb so far and bmi is 24.9 which I'm happy about, but one thing is for sure low carbing is awesome for bg, I am between 3 and 5 all the time now, if I eat a slice of burgen bread or similar I'm 7-8 for just one slice, so low carbing is great IMHO I will be watching my carbs forever now, I'm between 20-30 now but eventually want to eat as many as I can to keep weight off and bg down, all a big experiment :)

If your carb intake is below what your body needs for energy then it will go to your fat reserves for energy, so I guess that is what is happening. I believe this is how low-carb diets work. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me, I'm sure.
