Morning and Merry Christmas to all!
I was diagnosed as type 2 about 6-8 months ago and was scared by the prospect. I was prescribed Metformin, 1/day which was ok. Not doing as my nurse hoped it would, she increased my dose to 2/day.
This caused my bowels to take on a life of their own!! I work outside lots and there are rarely toilets nearby! "I also teach in colleges and leaving classes unattended is a no no. I was afraid to cough or break wind-- maybe too much information, but I want folk to understand where I was at.
I explained this to my nurse, who then gave me slow release metformin. Started ok, ended up loose again.
I really went into dieting, lost a stone, (15 down to 14)and my HbA1c came right down (cant recall numbers, they weren't important to me at the time). Nurse took me off all meds, pat on the back.
Recent bloods came in at 15.8mmol so urgent action needed. Was prescribed Gliclazide 80mg, only half a pill 20mins before breaky. Now getting readings of around 10-7 before breaky, 7-9 pm.
Nurse altered dose to one pill before breaky today(28.12.17) and will call me in 2 weeks.
I was given an Accu? Monitor, lancets and finger pricker, and test strips free on a prescription. Maybe as Im 61? She did say they get samples given, maybe I was just lucky?
Great advice on this forum. I got really depressed at being issued with monitoring equipment but get a lift reading your contributions. Initially felt like my life had taken a dive, but realise all is not lost. Cheers!
Hello

I put my metformin down the toilet! best move I made in my life, as same happened to my body as yours....

Instead, I took charge of MY BODY, that I know best of all aat 68 and a surfer, albeit it knee board these days...

What did I do simple.....lifestyle change that includes wonderful keto eating plan from dietdoctor.com
delicious, amazing real food.

1.
Low carb, cut out potatoes, pasta, rice and bread x 11 months. Eat low carbs not these ingredients included. 20 to 50 carbs a day, don't count just know what foods are low.

2.
Exercise more than normal days surfing ie. Treadmill 10mins morn after breakfast, lunch and dinner. Walking if not suring min 4 to 8klm a day depending on weather and commitments. basically 6 to 10,000 steps a day

3.
Intermittent Fasting thank you Dr. Jason Fung he is amazing hold in high esteem, by introducing this along with low carb and exercise, I have lost 21 kilos in 11 months no medications! fast 18 hrs two days i.e. that means just simply don't eat breakfast have tea only green no milk or sugar. one day 24 hour fast easy pie, no breakfast, or lunch dinner evening. How to work these fasts out that you don't feel hungry is to have your last meal say 8pm, you SLEEP for 8 hours approx., SO WHEN your next meal is due 18 hr fast lunch you don't realize you don't feel hungry, or notice the 18 hours as you have slept part of these, and feel so energized also.

results of these three simple procedure of lifestyle change speak for themselves....
My numbers were never over the cut off as I am pre diabetes were high normal i.e. highest random which has to be below 200mg/dl was 194mg/dl after eating cocktail of fresh fruits blended detoxing, I had no idea fruits could spike blood sugards so high was very naïve when told, "Tad high", cut out the fruit and go low carb..... but now...normal normal

2hr after eat 84mg/dl fasting 80mg/dl random anytime after eat 3,4,5,6 hours 89mg/dl

These numbers are consistent stable every four months when I decide to test with my Genteel blood tester, no pain, no sore fingers device! I dont test daily, or weekly, I want a quite and non worried life too interested in surfing and walking to be enjoyed, as numbers cut offs world wide are all Arbitrary set and different, so really the truth is no one know what the cut off should be, as an ex retired lawyer, believe in proof of evidence, there is absolutely no proof of evidence, medical or clinical to support the chosen cut offs for finger testing diagnosis or A1C and this is acknowledged and admitted by the expert committees as been numbers at whim random, choice, and even the experts in America cannot agree on these, so this is frightening! so I take a blaze view of what should or should not be the cut off, whatever, the numbers are same with one or two numbers up or down only either side, so its not just a good day, good luck its constant consistent normal numbers.

Oh, I forgot to mention on this 1,2,3, procedure, without metformin, I reduced my A1C by 24% in 12 weeks, did I get a pat on the back from my so called Doctor, no, he said, expected as I was taking Metformin, I had great pleasure pointing out I put them down the toilet, it was all natural hard work and efforts of myself that reduced the A1C not medication!!!.

Although I could not my doc of 30 years down the toilet for not supporting my efforts or recognizing a 21 kilo weight loss
I decided HE WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE RIGHT DOCTOR FOR ME AND WHAT DID I DO.

SACKED HIM....

Here I am feeling great numbers normal and controlled and eating fabulously including the festive days.

good Luck hope this inspires all though who experience the horrendous side effects of Metformin.
