Low-carb

Hi,
I've just started this low-carb business about 10-14 days ago. I just wanted to check what your opinions'advice is on my new diet. I'm a wee bit concerned about the ketosis (I don't really understand it!!) so any advice you can offer would be great. I'm looking to lose a minimum of 3 stone. Here's an example of my diet:
Breakfast: Small bowl of cereal with semi-skimmed milk
Snack: Piece of fruit
Lunch: Homemade soup (all veg: onion, celery, sweet potato and sweetcorn) followed by a piece of fruit
Snack: Another piece of fruit
Dinner: Leeks, spring onion, onion and garlic with poached haddock or grilled pork with steamed carrots and 3 steamed small new potatoes

Any tips??

Hi Marie.
Not being a Bio-chemist or such like - try checking out this link. It gives a simple explanation of Ketosis and related things.

It helped me understand better. As for your typical diet - I would be happy with most of it but the cereal is a prohibited food for me. I would also avoid any potato, and sweetcorn. You need to check your BG readings to know what it does to you.

Hope this helps.

Breakfast is a problem. Not only is cereal high in carbs (incl. sugar), milk also has lactose in, which should be kept to a minimum, if you are serioulsy lo-carbing. A favourite breakfast of mine (when I have time to cook it) is eggs scrabled in butter with a little cream, along with some fried (again, in butter) Shitake Mushrooms.

Also - all fruits are not equal. Berries are good if you are lo-carbing, but Bananas should be avoided like the plague. great lo-carb snacks are things along the lines of Olives, cheese, meat, nuts, etc... You'll find these things fill youup much more, and so you'll eat less of them.

Potatoes are BAD. (Yes they are). sweet potatoes are a little better, but should still only be taken in moderation. Sweetcorn is a no-no, and carrots should not be eaten excessively either. Green Veg (spinach, string beans, cabbage, salad, etc...) are great. The more of these you can eat the better. Strict lo-carbers (like me) get all their carbs from this type of veg.

Good luck, and stick with it!
