Low-energy formula diet yields short-term results for type 2 diabetes, study finds

For "low energy" I am reading "low carb". If I decided to use all my 800 calories on Mars Bars, that would be about 100g carbs. Compared to the Eat Well plate, that is positively low carb
And that's another problem with the low calorie diet in general (not the shake ones, or 'good food' ones) The great thing about low calorie diets is that no food is forbidden. It's also the worst thing. I remember finishing the last few chocolate buttons from one of my kids packs....and then taking a tomato off my dinner plate to 'pay back' the calories...

When I did the 5:2 for a short while before I was diagnosed T2, I felt great on the fasting days. Looking back now, I was probably already diabetic and it was the carb reduction due to the calorie restriction that was making me feel better. I gave it up though as I was too hungry to sleep. Managing better now with lower carbs and enough fat to sleep at night. I don't count calories now.

I do count calories but only to make sure I have at least 1300. I don't have a maximum. If I'm hungry I eat more HF with my LC. I'm also a lot more healthy nowadays. If only I could go back and tell my young self what mistakes not to make......but hey, that's why I commented on this thread to try to warn others. :)

Actually you probably felt great because there is a euphoric feeling after the initial hunger once your body gets into its heavy fat burning. People at work that are doing 5:2 also report it. Interestingly I don't get hunger pangs any more; like my body has just got used to it and says ok time to switch again.

I do not know if there are differences for male and females during starvation times. I expect there is because female bodies are geared towards reproduction so that would put a lot more requirements of shutting down those areas not really necessary and may be this is the reason for under-active thyroids and a shift in hormonal levels. The male body needs to try and continue functioning fully so that we can hunt and gather.

I have no issues with low cal high cal switching except when that low cal pushes into ketosis but that is less pronounce now as well

Being female was another spanner in my works as when I was having all these diabetes symptoms in my late forties, Dr Google explained them all away as menopausal symptoms. I was walking around with a big arrow over my head with the word "diabetic" next to it and I couldn't see it. Never mind, worse things happen :)

Before I was diagnosed I thought I had menopausal symptoms . I had awful hot flushes . They seemed to be worse about 2.-3pm and 8-9pm . I laughed about it even though they made me feel like total ****, I couldn't concentrate felt ill etc . I used to carry a fan around with me .
I had an 'episode' in the middle of an interview for a job I really wanted. I wasn't nervous , I knew the interviewers well. I still could not tell you what some of the questions were , they were talking but I could not understand then , that's when I went out and bought a glucometer.
I had been eating 'the healthy plate ' !!!!
After reading about low carb successes and eating to my meter I switched to lower carb included my activity and tested tested tested .I didn't care if I had to buy my metre etc , I was the best thing I have ever bought .

Have to say the results have been fantastic . It's funny how I no longer have the hot flushes or what I considered low blood sugar dips( obviously they were spikes after my brown bread lunch or my healthy carb dinner !!)

I shout loudly every where I go about lower carb ( I do have small portions and love my 2 squares of dark chocolate at night ). Also I am human and can go off the rails at times . I just make sure that most of the time I am careful. I don't want to go back to feeling like I did .
