Low Glycaemic Index Eating

Male, aged 82 now, I have been Type 2 for about 10 years. 2 x 500 mg Metformin twice a day plus 4 Glyclazude. Did not bother to take readings for a while then found it was 20mmol/l. Shock horror. Immediately went onto low glycaemic index diet as originally propounded by Michel Montignac and subsequently taken up by others. Lots of good research by University in Sydney, Australia. Also, chromium tabs etc. from local natural health lady. Within three months lost two stone, 4 inches off waist and readings around 6 to 10, higher first thing in the morning. No side effects, vision OK and feel very fit and still working - chartered civil engineer. Don't worry, you will survive. The grand old medical profession now has no less than three different of units to measure sugar levels. HbA1c now come in mmol/mol rather than the mmol/l we all knew - Google it for more information - 7 mmol/l equates to 53 mmol/mol. Just read mine again (pre-lunch) and it is 6.6, that's OK. The Montignac diet can be a bit of a bore for whomever cooks in the household, but it works. Both health and diabetic control. It is not just another low carb diet.

Hi,
Glad to hear that you''ve got control back again.
I was interested that you mentioned Montignac. I think his present website is a good source but I found one of his books less convincing.
(it was a very old version, found it on a shelf at a rented holiday apartment.)
Did you actually use the food combining rules (no fats / starchy carbs together, no protein with starchy carbs, no fruit as part of a meal etc) or just make use of a low GI diet?

Dear Phoenix,
After complying with Montignac's ideas very closely until I had got both weight and readings down, I moved into his Phase II and remain fairly stable. Tend to be higher first thing in the morning, 9 or 10 mmol/l, but tests during the day are around 6. I find a balance is needed between not driving my wife mad by being too pernickety and keeping the readings OK.
