Low mmol

Hi everyone I'm quite new to all this so please bare with me. 1st they said I was type1 put on insolin, however for the last 6 weeks they are saying I'm type 2 diabetic and off insolin and now on metaformin + 1 water tablet. I see on here people are happy when their mmol is in the 4s I'm absolutely terrified if I go that low incase it keeps dropping! It's literally taken over my life and panicking about it.

how did they initially diagnose yourself as type1 via what tests?

i note your terrifed of going low, there is a free trial of libre alongside dexcom CGM's available libe provides 15 days dexcom 10 days so there would be a 25 days there of not needing to finger prick so much :) (check if low or highs or feel different than results otherwise indicate is there instructions).

see the following urls:

those may assist to put your mind at rest they have the ability to set up alarms for when high/low which your in control over setting those alarms.

regarding your fear of 4's there is nothing really wrong with 4's imo see page: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-a-hypo.html when falls below 4mmol/L. 3.9 and under that page offeres some advice.

it maybe worth speaking to your team if not had gad/c-peptide test to have one done.

Are you getting 4s on your meter now you’re on Metformin only are you just concerned that you may? Now your no longer on insulin and just on Metformin you shouldn’t really experience dangerous hypos as Metformin isn’t a hypo inducing drug, it works with the liver to control too much glucose being dumped into your system.

If you’ve been running high numbers for a while you may experience “false hypos” this is where you get the feeling of being hypo but your BG is fine, your body is used to running much higher and is trying to get back to what it’s used to. It’s best to ride these out if you can as treating them as a hypo will only prolong the higher numbers.

As mentioned anything below 4 is classed as a hypo and some T2 who are diet only or on Metformin, myself included I wouldn’t treat until 3.5 if I was feeling fine with no hypo symptoms. If I felt a bit off at my low number I would have a small no more than 5g snack of carbs just to nudge me up. There is a big temptation to over treat and then shoot too high.

I’ve never used a CGM but the advice is to always check any too low number with a finger prick test as they can be a bit inaccurate at low numbers I believe

Are you still on the Gliclazide as well at the Metformin @Dee1960 ? As @grantg asked, did they do a C-Peptides test or did they originally diagnose T1 because your Blood glucose was high?
I also agree with @lovinglife , CGMs accuracy goes off when numbers drop out of the normal range, so your 4's could in fact be in the 5's it's best to do a finger prick to confirm. If your blood sugars are constantly going into the low range maybe speak to your Dr.

My freestyle is St up for anything below 5. Today had the alarm go off. Me in a panic eat my lunch at 11.30 ‍♀️

I was originally diagnosed with type1 with a question mark because my mmol up and I had mild ketones . They did a blood test that had to be sent off and they said that it would take a while to get results from that. But 2 weeks later my mmol had come right down to 7.5 and I was 91% in target so the consultant said I was type 2 and that's when they started getting my off the injections then onto gliclazide then finally onto metaformin for the last 2 weeks.

You’re all very new to this so don’t beat yourself up about it, getting your head around a change in diagnosis is not easy either, I went through the exact same thing of being diagnosed T1 then changed to T2 so can empathise how you’re feeling. 5 is a perfect number to be (and that was probably set because you were on insulin). Try not to panic but next time your alarm goes off maybe test with a finger prick to confirm you number - anything above 4 on the finger prick you should be fine. Eating lunch at 11.30 isn’t disastrous and it was probably better for you to do that than panic treat with lots of carbs & sweet stuff.
