Low on folic acid

You really need to know what your last test results were and what basis the doctor had for prescribing those supplements before you start to panic. As you are on Metformin, which is known to reduce B12 in some people, your GP will (should) order a B12 test for you. He may already have done that of course. But you need to know, and if you haven't had a test, you must ask for one. If you don't ask you won't get.

Update.....
Had my bloods taken asked the nurse why and she looked at my results online and said because you are low on folic acid and the diabetic doctor that looks at them has prescribed the folic acid.
I asked what are my results and what is normal , she told me and i said but my results are above normal....she just shrugged her shoulders and said , results will be back Friday make an appointment to see doc im not qualified to advice. But your B12 is fine.
So... Went to desk, asked for print out as you suggested, but told had to have it authorised by doc, i asked her to look at results and see the normal levels written above. She agreed with me mine were above normal , and tookthe print out to find a doctor.
One came back with her and said are you taking multi vits , which i replied yes and i have in my hand extra folic acid.
She said take nothing ....the diabetic doc has made an error. He must have mixed you up with the patient notes he was loking at before, mistakes happen.
So there you are, i will ring Friday see what my results are.
Wonder what would have happened if i had taken the folic for 6 months.

Hells Bells, that is disgusting treatment, and what a good job you pursued it rather than trust the doctors and nurses. This is why we say knowledge is power, never take glib comments such as "you need this" or "you are fine" without asking why and not only that but also seeing why from your print outs. I think I would be writing to the Practice Manager or whoever deals with complaints at your surgery. That cannot be left as it is in my opinion. You may have become very ill down the line - BUT what a big relief for you. Well done on your actions.

The doctor did look rather sheepish , wouldnt let me have the printout unfortunately .
I will go in on Friday and ask to compare my new blood test results from today.
Thanks for your help and advice

Make sure you get all print outs of all blood tests since diagnosis. You are entitled to them once your GP has seen them - and yours obviously has seen them. It's your blood!

well good it wasn´t something lifethreatening medicine he was wrong about... :shifty:
