Lowering HbA1c before surgery

Hi all,

I am due to have a surgical procedure but have just received a telephone call from a pre operation assessment nurse saying my HbA1c of 79 or 7,9 ( i couldnt understand her ) was too high and I need to get it down to 69 or 6.9 before they can operate.

I am due at the diabetic clinic this afternoon and will hopefully get some advice from the DSN about how to lower this reading - however she has not been the most helpful person in the past.

I would be grateful if anyone could give me advice on what I do next to get my levels low enough to be operated on.

Start with some basal testing @nicolabarnett, without getting the basal dose right you will always be going round in circles, once you know that's right you can then look at I:C ratio's and diet.
 
Have a read of the following, it's for pump users but the advice on fasting in different time frames is the same for those on MDI:

As for your bg, they do like you to have your diabetes under control pre-surgery as it greatly reduces the chances of complications and speeds up the recovery time.

Thank you, I will give this a go.

I have been suffering from ear infections since my last years holiday and been on anti-biotics for months, I have a feeling this is why i am so high
 
Another piece of advice to help with lowering Hba1C is to make sure your overnight level is no higher than 7.0mmol/l. As we spend up to a third our lives asleep, keeping that portion of it at a sensibly low level really helps to lower Hba1C.

That wouldn't help matters Nicola, I don't know if you've heard of or read the book Think like a Pancreas but if not it's worth purchasing, it goes into things like basal testing and other aspects of type 1 diabetes management.

Hope you get your surgery and all works out well.

Just ordered it - thank you for the advice :-)
 
They canceled my op three times now the last was coz I was 1.1% above he 8% recommend by surgeon.......total bs by the NHS once again ...so I removed my self from the NHS and paid for the op ...in fact I have now removed my self from most NHS services as they don't give a stuff if you have D..they only care about the job their are looking in to ..so they set stupid levels for us to hit for surgery.....so if I was you Nicola...pay for op to be done ...... Better care and better treatment too if your D

I would love to be able to go private Jibber, however funds dont stretch that far
 
I sold everything I had ....daft I know ...but there are just things ....cost me £800 in total
...maybe sell hubby off (if have one lol ) or as considered ....knocking my boss off and sell him to a some mad old Dom ...so they can beat him and I can recover ....but I held it back ....promise ...
