Hi
Today, I've checked my blood glucose 3 times, (more frequently than usual) and my readings are:-

9 30am (fasting) 4.7
12.45pm (before lunch) 5.0
11.20pm (+3hours) 5.2

We had a bar meal earlier tonight, so I'm pleasantly surprised at the 5.2 reading about 3 hours later...

Perhaps my meter is faulty? I certainly hope not!

Regards, Malc.

Well done Malc! I'm sure your meter is fine. If the reading after the bar meal is lower than usual, it will be the alcohol. I'm betting you had a drink with your meal? Alcohol stops carbs processing into glucose in the same way.

Alcohol if beer/wine type drinks contain carbs of their own but it's the post drinking 6-18 hours later where this can stop the liver releasing glucose which is why type 1 diabetics can very often have hypo after hypo the next day if they drink too much

that's a good day for you Malc  I test a minimum of 4 times every day myself... on a bad day sometimes that can be about 12 or so. I have a few calluses on my fingers. lol.

Hi Grazer...
You may be surprised to hear that no alcohol was involved. Just two glasses of tonic water (with ice) + a coffee...

I'm hoping that my reduced carb diet (+ moderate exercise) regime is helping to establish lower base readings...
Only time will tell.

I'm still getting my test strips on prescription, (free, here in Wales), but I have a feeling that the situation could be reviewed in the near future. As I stated I only feel the need to check occasionally. I'm one of the lucky ones on that score, I think.

I had a retinopathy check earlier this week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the results will be in order.
Regards,
Malc.
