Hi, I am just hoping for a bit of reassurance please.

I am 40 years old and have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years. I have got macula edema in both eyes, and have to go back in July, as at the moment my sight is good, and no treatment is required. I am just very scared as I’m guessing that it is quite likely that I will go blind at some point in the future.
Has anyone had macula edema, and had it reverse or improve without treatment? Or has anyone had treatment a long time ago, and now stable?
I’m just so anxious about it all the time, and would appreciate any advice or reassurance.

Hi,

If it’s any consolation to you.
I was diagnosed a few years back with it. Had treatment, vast improvement. & still hold a valid entitlement to drive..

Aup Helen, I can understand where your coming from, me being told that i was frightened to death of what's in store, Ive got macular edema in both eyes, aged 41 thinking omg the complications are kicking in, from my first eye injection about a year back a was frightened big time. Your mind can wander thinking of the frightening scenarios, I've had tons of ops this year, eye injections detached retina, high pressures etc, you are no where that stage, I only had another op yesterday, got to take a load of drops eye looks sore even thanked them when asked how it went, said enjoyed it listening to another day in paradise Phil Collins while I am here again, the hardest thing is going through problems alone, this forum has been helpful. My diabetes is still rubbish but bit by bit iam trying to improve things that's all we can do, take things nice and steady and face any little obstacle one at a time. I was having injections in left eye once a month now it's every few months, and even after all the things I've had done to my right eye I can still see quite a bit, it's amazing what they can do these days, but as before your no where near that stage and Iam the other end of the scale, but I do know how scary it is when you get told etc and the panic/worry sets in, please try not to worry duck there's loads of stuff they can do now, and not sure what your diabetes is like, but improving things nice and steady I find the best way, don't be too hard on yourself, try not to worry too much, talk to whoever when you can, sorry for long post but been there/here and there's always hope.

I really appreciate your reply. Thank you. It sounds like you have been through so much with your eyes. I wish you well, and hope things continue to be stable for you.
You are right, it’s so scary, and it’s hard not to google things all the time, which is never good!!

.But does that eventually lead to total blindness?

Severe visual impairment if left untreated & monitored. I’d say so.
Just grab those appointments with both hands. :)

I'm confident you will be fine..

I am 37M. Macular edema (right side) started in early 2016. It was on the side for 2 years. Then doc decided to give me 6 shots in that eye. Didnt really help. Late 2019 it got worse and closer to center of the eye. Distorted vision. Doc gave one more shot but then refused to give me more shots saying I might go blind. Vision was still 2020. Almost 2 years after that now and eyes are better. Distortion still there ,some minor missing spots when reading letters. But everyday activities are fine.Edema is still there . But vision is still 2020. Annoying? yes but still life is normal. You will be fine. Enjoy life. Spend time with loved ones. Stay happy :)

Thank you for sharing, I am glad to hear that things are still ok for you!
It’s always good to hear peoples experiences, as everything on Google is quite negative and never anything very positive.
If people keep having treatment throughout their whole lives, can it stop blindness?
