Just come out of hospital after having been taken in by ambulance thinking I was having the start of a heart attack. I had not been feeling well since I started on insulin 3 months ago and then later on metformin and even worse when the dose was increased. I had absolutely no energy, but also could not sleep, was getting leg cramps in the middle of the night, then the last three days I felt nauseous, then I started vomiting and had extreme abdominal pain, then the last night my heart started pounding and having slightly irregular beats. At that point I got a bit scared so called an ambulance.
After an ECG and blood tests they said I had a low magnesium level, which would cause all the above symptoms and it was no doubt brought on from the severe diarrhea I had been having. They said it was not uncommon. If that is the case why is this not monitored as a routine?
