Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, this is my first post!
My brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just over 3 weeks ago and he is seriously seriously missing his sugar. He has a very sweet tooth so this has hit him doubly hard.
It's his 13th birthday on Saturday and I'm making him a sugar-free cake but he loves sweets and for my birthday which was last Saturday I happened to get a sweet-making recipe book.... Coincidence since it was from our mum?!
Anyway, I was wondering, if I make the sweets in the book but with his sugar substitute (made from fruit sugars) will he basically be allowed as many as he likes?
The other ingredients in the sweets are essentially gelatine and cornflour with various different flavourings.
I've looked at shop-bought diabetic sweets and they all say may cause a laxitive effect- well I don't really want that. Is that because of the fake sugar or the way they make them? Will mine end up being a laxitive?
This is completely new to us so we're still trying to work around what he can have and how things affect him but I know after 3 weeks of having nothing sweet (recommended by the docs so his blood sugar can stabilise- it was at 28.9!) he'd be really grateful if we could find something that he can have.
Thanks in advance
