Making your own sweets

Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, this is my first post!

My brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just over 3 weeks ago and he is seriously seriously missing his sugar. He has a very sweet tooth so this has hit him doubly hard.
It's his 13th birthday on Saturday and I'm making him a sugar-free cake but he loves sweets and for my birthday which was last Saturday I happened to get a sweet-making recipe book.... Coincidence since it was from our mum?!

Anyway, I was wondering, if I make the sweets in the book but with his sugar substitute (made from fruit sugars) will he basically be allowed as many as he likes?
The other ingredients in the sweets are essentially gelatine and cornflour with various different flavourings.

I've looked at shop-bought diabetic sweets and they all say may cause a laxitive effect- well I don't really want that. Is that because of the fake sugar or the way they make them? Will mine end up being a laxitive?

This is completely new to us so we're still trying to work around what he can have and how things affect him but I know after 3 weeks of having nothing sweet (recommended by the docs so his blood sugar can stabilise- it was at 28.9!) he'd be really grateful if we could find something that he can have.
Thanks in advance :)

Hartlys sugar free jelly is very good ,could you make up the jelly and pour into little molds or ice cube containers ? There are a couple of things you could look at on the forum one called Chocolate heaven that may help

Hi Maltey, welcome to the forum! I am not sure but I think fruit sugars are just as bad as ordinary sugars for diabetics - I would check before you make any. The very sweet tooth could well be a symptom of diabetes and you may find that this eases off for him once he gets his blood sugars under control. It would be best if he could reduce his reliance on sweet things because as you say lots of artificial sweetener can have a laxative effect. I have heard good things about stevia, which is a new sweetener which is made from a South American leaf and therefore a bit more natural than other artificial sweeteners - I haven't tried it yet - because I still have some Splenda yet, but I have found Splenda makes my blood glucose spike so I might just throw it away anyway.

I made some low carb chocolate muffins yesterday - you can find the recipe under the 'chocolate paradise' thread on here. They were wonderful. Also Boots sell Strawberries and Cream and Caramel sweets in their diabetic range, but go easy ...

This is the stuff he has

He had Truvia but hated it so switched to that stuff. Is it any good?

That looks fine Maltey - I've never tried it but its been recommended to me. There are lots of recipes on this forum, try using the search box at the top on the right and I am sure you will find something suitable :D

Oh yes, I'm making my way through them- there's a good selection!
Do you think that stuff could have a laxative effect or is it usually just shop-bought stuff that does that?

Any polyol has laxative effects IF you have too many. Secret of any diabetic Chocs/sweets is to have just a few. Polyols also count as carbs and raise BGs despite what they say, but I reckon they only count for a bit less than half. The cocate paradise thread is the best place to see treats, but still to be eaten in moderation.
