Malaria tablets and Diabetes

I'm off on honeymoon to Kenya in a couple of months and among the vaccination jabs I've been prescribed malaria tablets. I've had type 1 diabetes for 33 years now and have recently had a bit of laser treatment to the backs of my eyes for new blood vessels that have formed. I know malaria tablets have quinine in them which can damage your eyes so I was wondering if I'm at more risk of this happening to me seeing as though I have this complication going on with the backs of my eyes.

Congratulations, and i'm sure you'll have a great time.

You'll have to ask a doctor, preferably the one that did your eyes. Quinnine can affect the eyes, but i'm not sure how. It depends on what state your eyes are in, how long they'll need to heal, what dose of quinnine etc.

Only a doc can give you the accurate info, and whatever you do, take the anti-malaria tablets. eye damage can be dealt with, malaria less so.

Malcolm,

As Celtic says, best speaking with your consultant about this issue, but nonetheless hope you have a wonderful honeymoon in Kenya!

Thanks I have a follow up appointment tomorrow so I'll ask then. I just thought I'd see if I could find out on here first. It'll be a nightmare if they say I cant take them, I don't know what I'll do!. Also I've bought a couple of cool bags to put my insulin in. I hope the place were staying has a fridge but somehow I think that might not be a possibility out on the Masi game reserve!
