Maple Syrup?

I keep reading things that real/pure maple is diabetic friendly-er, is this true?

I cannot have any artificial sweeteners, and while I no longer crave/want sugar, I do occasionally want to make a dessert (birthday, xmas, so on) Is maple syrup safer to use than honey or normal sugar?

Will eating a little once every few months completely throw me off track?

@tk123 I edited my post while you posting, 13.4 grams of carbs per tablespoon.

Carbs are sugar, but it's up to you what you do as I cannot advise you.

I'm aware that carbs = sugar, I think you've misunderstood what Im asking. Many articles claim real maple syrup does not effect the blood sugar like pure sugars or even fruits, and carbs do. I am asking if anyone here can back that up, or knows if its a false claim.

I believe it’s a false claim.
However if your unsure how peculiar food effects your BG you can test and see.

When you see this kind of information the most important thing is to consider the source. Anyone can have an opinion, but it may not necessarily be correct or unbiased - e.g.: The first reference regarding maple syrup being suitable for diabetics that I found via Google and appeared to be from a reputable research source was actually sponsored and funded by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada... 'Nuff said...

But the best (and probably really the only ) way to find out how your levels may be affected by it, is to test and see, and the ideal way to do this would be via a continous monitor like the Libre sensor.

I agree consider who is paying for the opinion. My way is to avoid anything I know has sugar, In this day and age there are so many man made things that contain sugar or natural things that convert into Sugar that Testing your Bs levels and adjusting your diet accordingly Maple Syrup is a No No for me

It is sucrose, so is not a bonne idee for diabetics. You are hoping it was fructose, which is metabolised differently, but is still considered harmful to T2D.

Edit: it is 68% sugar. Your choice, but it would in all probability send your bgl rocketing. Depends on what level of control you are hoping to achieve long term. I have found that a splurge of sugar can trigger carb cravings that make you want to snack, and so begin a downward (or upward bglwise) spiral. I have just spent a week trying to recover myself from a recent carb binge, and it was needing great strictness on my side to get back down. Not advised.

Hey tk123, if 1 Tbsp = 13.4 gm carb, then 1 tsp = 4.4 ish gm carb.....so if you go for one teaspoon and see how your react, I would say do so! But eat it with some fat or protein, not on its own, and don't forget to test at 2 hours and then maybe 3 and 4 hours....some people can do this and they don't get much of a rise....only you can tell. It is all sugar, so any claim that it is diabetic friendly is a bit wonky, so for myself, like Oldvatr said, it can be so delicious that it causes a carb binge, which is not pretty:yuck: Here's to the good old days when I blindly ate maple syrup with abandon:eek:/L

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.

Try https://diabetesmealplans.com/10998/maple-syrup-diabetes/ which says not good.
Try http://www.nnyagdev.org/maplefactsheets/CMB 301 Is Maple Sugar Better for People with Diabetes_.pdf which also says not good and that Maple Syrup suppliers should not be encouraging diabetics to eat it.

Bottom line - it is pure sugar. Sadly there is no pot of gold at the rainbow's end and fluffy unicorns have not really been observed skipping through the meadows. Treat it as you would refined sugar and you won't go far wrong.:yuck:

Edit:
https://www.diabeteshealth.com/maple-syrup-a-sweet-surprise/ reports claims that there are all sorts of wonderful minerals and trace elements in Maple Syrup which can even help prevent diabetes.
However the report ends:
"
You might want to pause for a moment before rushing out and buying jug after jug of Canada’s finest maple syrup, though. It still contains plenty of sugar, and Seeram discourages gorging on the stuff for possible health benefits. Similar compounds have been found in blueberries and green tea, among other foods.

The results must have pleased the research’s sponsors. Funds for the scientific work came from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

And just for comparison 1 teaspoon of sugar also contains 4g carbs - give or take a grain or two....

Going out. After closing from work, I relax at home.
For me, sugar is sugar, maple, aspartame, saccharine, honey etc. I fear hypo that’s the only reason you find sugar in my house

Weird but my wife tried Nourishing Tradition’s home made ice cream.

Egg yolks
Cream (raw)
Vanilla
Pure maple syrup

She made it with less maple syrup than the recipe called for. This recipe is without milk. Cream was grass fed raw (non pasteurized)

It did not spike me.

Did high fat offer “protection”?

Is it just that maple syrup (local) is very different than table sugar?
