Max ketones for reasons other than high BS?

Hi

I'm just wondering if anybody knows...... Is any situation in which you have maximum ketones in your urine (3+++) dangerous or is it only when accompanied by high BS?

I had a situation the other week where I was suffering from prolonged dehydration. My ketones were 3+++ but there was no glucose in my urine. My BS was 8 at the time - this is not usually high enough to give me polyuria/polydipsia. I have another medical condition that causes dehydration.

I'm just wondering whether high ketones due to dehydration are a serious issue or not?

thanks

In general, ketones without high blood glucose are not dangeerrous, especially if you feel well, but since you have other medical issues, I would contact a doctor or NHS24 if it's the weekend.

PS, what prompted you to test for ketones, did you suspect something to be wrong?

Hi Hana

Thanks for your reply. I have got some urinalysis test strips at home as I sometimes get UTIs without the normal UTI symptoms (my GP gave them to me - They're worth having if you suffer from UTIs as you can pick it up quickly.). I thought I would test as I couldn't hold any water in my body - the only thing that showed up was max ketones.

I replace mineralcorticoids (due to adrenal insufficiency) and I think my dehydration was connected to that rather than my diabetes. But it all gets a bit confusing. I'll definitely check with my GP so I know for next time.

Thanks
Goji
