Hi I am newly diagnosed and new to the website.

Currently looking to measure before and after meals but had to have a snack( small piece of chicken and an apple) when I got in from work and realise now it probably raised my pre dinner reading.

The snack was about 1hr before the dinner

Any do's / donts of self measuring please?

I don't normally snack but if I do I avoid any carbs unless I am in hypo territory- for me 3.8 or below - I would have a bigger piece of chicken and no apple or a bit of avocado or a piece of cheese and a couple of radishes. I sometimes have a cup of bovril.

I don't test my snacks if I don't have carbs - I do test if I'm treating a low bs

That's so great that you're testing!

Yes, a snack before dinner will throw your numbers off. Some days are like that. :)

Testing pre-meal and 2-hours post meal works well to see how the food you ate affected you.

If you're curious as to how high your glucose peaks, you can do a 1-hour or 1-hour 15 minute post meal test.

If you have a really high reading, you can also test each hour to watch it go back down. Or go for a walk to reduce your glucose level, then see how much it dropped.

Other times to test are when you wake up.

I like to test before and after walking - (I generally wait until and hour and a half after eating to walk).

Each day, each week is different for me. Depending on what I want to monitor, I my test a lot or very little.

If you don't have a lot of test strips, prioritize what you want to monitor each day.

If you feel the need to test a lot, find the cheapest glucose strips available and buy them and the meter to go with it. Here in the US, I can buy strips that cost 18 cents each. :)

Yes, I agree with the above. The snack will have thrown your evening meal levels out. I don't snack. I am hardly ever hungry, but if I do feel like a bit of something I just have a cup of tea with a tiny dash of milk and that satisfies me. I doubt the apple was a good choice, but the chicken should have been OK.

When you record your levels (next to the food you ate) make sure you write a note about your snack so you remember what you had, or you may wonder why your levels were higher than normal.

By eating carbs such as an apple before dinner, you will most likely be feeling hungry when you get to the table and might eat more because of that.
Remember that for some people an apple could be equivalent to their entire day's carbs - that is a hefty amount to eat as a snack and will push your BG up .

Thanks all

Have been doing my best not to snack but I was getting Hangry and didn't want to go over the edge and make an even worse food choice.

My reading 1hr after snack therefore pre dinner was 7.5

2hrs after dinner ( turkey chilli, cauliflower, broccoli , carrots and cheese ) I was 5.6

Fasting this morning 5.2

Off to the gym now, all the best to everyone.
